Yay! We're staying at the Hotel del Coronado!!

So happy - DH and I are going San Diego in a few weeks (I'm going with him on a business trip) and we managed to get a room at the Del! (the famous SD hotel where Some Like it Hot was filmed, as well as my favorite My Blue Heaven!)

We're staying at another hotel for the first few days, since that's where the conference is, and then we're off to the Del for our own vacation. It will definitely be a splurge (among the room rates, its $15 to self park your car each day, and $37 for brunch !) but I hear if you can swing it it's so worth it.
I can't wait - the pictures of the resort and beach are gorgeous

Wow - now I'm even more excited We were going to splurge once we found out there was a room available, so when we called and were quoted a lower price we jumped on it. I have heard nothing but fabulous reviews on the resort.

I'll definitely post pics once we're back!

Shamma - we were planning to stop by the resort and check it out regardless of where we were staying, so you'll definitely have to make a pit stop there during your trip!

Now, since SD seems to be so popular here, what do you suggest we do during our stay? I hadn't heard anything about the Air Force Academy - but that seems cool! Do they have a base nearby that can be visited, or do they just fly around there area?

I heard great things about their famous SD zoo, but then was recently told to skip the zoo and head straight for the Wildlife Park? Someone told me it was much better than the regular zoo. I wonder if that's correct?
I also want to stop in La Jolla for some shopping and spend some time driving up the coast for a little.
Definitely check out the beach, although it I think it will be too chilly for swimming.
Then check out the Gaslamp district for dinner/drinks.

Yabbo - I'm going to FM you my info so that maybe we could meet up if the timing works out for both of us

Fabulous Teri!!!

maybe we can get together for brunch!! since thats all I can afford!! lol

lets see if I can give you a list of things to do...

**gaslamp is cool for dinner
**la jolla for the beverly hills type shopping
**by coronado there is a state beach...silver strand...if you go south towards imperial beach...if you like waves and a relaxing kind of robert moses beach
**John loves Seaworld...not sure if James is into that
**balboa park...there are many art museums and such...this is also where the zoo is...
**Old Town...It has a Mexican/Aztec feel to it...the best mexican food I have ever had was at the Old Town Mexican Grill
**not sure about the air force...but there is Miramar (where Top Gun was filmed)...its a Marine base now...but I guess still a jet training center

I'll FM you my cell # and our CA #

Re: Yay! We're staying at the Hotel del Coronado!!

Thanks! I actually wouldn't be surprised if any military base was closed to the public with all the recent events. I remember being on Kauai next to a navy base, and the locals kept telling us to watch out and make sure we didnt' cross over onto their property - it was a little unnerving!

Any other suggestions gladly welcome

Yabbo - I'll look out for your FM

Re: Yay! We're staying at the Hotel del Coronado!!

All of this San Diego talk has convinced me to plan a vacation!!

I like the Wild Animal Park better than the zoo, but I'm biased bc friends worked at WAP. Both are lots of fun. Keep in mind that the WAP is in Escondido, about 30-40 minutes from downtown San Diego.

Check on-line, you may be able to get combo passes to the zoo, WAP and/or Sea World (which is also a great park).

If you go to LaJolla, check out Torrey Pines State Park. There are hiking trails through beautiful bluffs overlooking the ocean-and a nice, quiet beach below.

I don't remember where it was, but there's a nice vineyard nearby called Orfila. Fun to go to a tasting, then buy a bottle of wine, some bread and cheese and sit out by the vineyards for lunch.

The Coronado looks spectacular! Have a great time!! BTW, did you know that it's rumored to be HAUNTED????!!!!!
