If you can hit Macy's, they sell the Lenox baby line. I got my friends daughter the Noah's Ark collection toothfairy box, and a piggy bank.

Since one year olds are usually walking around or real close to it - I usually get something like a lawnmower or carraige they can push around or maybe a diggity dog they can walk. And depending on the relationship, I'll add a savings bond to the package.

how about a gift card to Toys R Us? I'm sure they have enough toys and clothes. This way Mom can use it to buy diapers and stuff.

I second the gift card to Toys R' US. That way the Mom can buy things the baby doesn't have.
You also can't go wrong with Baby Motzart videos kids love them!

gift card is a good idea my sister is having her 1 year old bday party soon, and i think she is looking forward to her daugher ripping the wrapping paper off the gifts....
...perhaps a little toy with the gift certificate?
