Re: NWR: Grrrr... FH is obessed with moving to NYC
Well, it's obvious you're the realist. Are you guys hoping to buy or rent in NYC?
If buying forget it with the way prices have skyrocketed in the past few years, renting isn't a great option either since you'll only be throwing money away...
You could humor him by looking at the apartments with him. Once he finds out how little space he gets for the money, he won't want to move. Trust me. ;)
3k for a small 1 bedroom apartment isn't gonna cut it once you're used to that much space in LI.
Or you could compromise with him and look in a nearby town? I live in Hoboken and would recommend that area as it's so close to NYC and yet half the cost. My FH works downtown and gets to work under 20 minutes, door to door. You can get a nice 1br for $1500/month buy or rent.
Brooklyn Heights is also lovely but becoming almost as expensive as NYC.

Re: NWR: Grrrr... FH is obessed with moving to NYC
sorry, you guys are having disagreements. I honestly don't think you should move b/c. if you are planning on having kids in the future LI is a more family oriented place. Also the rent in manhattan is ridiculous, for such small living space. You have a nice place in LI already I wouldn't move. If you do decide to move, don't sell the place in LI just try subletting. Good luck.

Re: NWR: Grrrr... FH is obessed with moving to NYC
My FH was from Brooklyn and he works in the city now. He is always saying that living in the city would be great for work and if we want to live the party, but that is all. He said on the hot summer days it is HOT, also people have to think about a family, you really don't want to move into the city if you plan on starting a family in a few years. He can't believe how lucky the kids have/had it on LI. Also rent, very hard to save with the rent being so high.
good luck

Re: NWR: Grrrr... FH is obessed with moving to NYC
Have you try doing some math? Would it be more expensive living in the city - it's probably an obvious question unless you have a deluxe penthouse apartment out in LI that you're paying 5k a month for. Hehe
If it's more expensive try putting down the #s and show it to him how cost inefficient it would be to move! Especially if you guys are saving now for retirement and kids to come along, the extra money that's being used will be going towards your living expenses.
Also, don't forget you will be paying MORE for groceries, eating out more, etc. so factor that all in. 30 minutes is not far from the city at all! If your FH works in the city, he can easily stay there after work to take advantage of the cultural aspect of the city before coming home.
Or if you want to compromise, you can probably rent out the LI apartment and rent a place in the city. Give it a one year trial. See what happens?

Sorry, I just had to chime in again after reading your last comment. your FH is obviously not thinking about you if he hasn't considered your feelings about working in the city. It's going to be hard for you to get a job with a good school district if you're a newcomer to the city school system.
We all know how great most NYC school districts are. :P Definitely bring that up and guilt-trip him. ;)

ug, I so feel your pain. My FH works in the city and wants to move in that direction... I am a teacher (well, a teacher hopeful, I'm applying for jobs) and I really don't think I could handle working in a city school. I just DON'T want to live in the city, I am not a city person. I need trees and grass. And real estate in the city is just ridiculous.
I wish I knew what to tell you... Just know that you're not alone!

Re: NWR: Grrrr... FH is obessed with moving to NYC
i agree with putting the numbers and pros and cons on paper. have him do the same that way it won't be so unbalanced. and hopefully everything will be clear.
manhattan's not a bad place at all. there's a few areas that are very family oriented just like LI. in my opinion, the kids (that i come across) are very mature in comparison. and it's because they're exposed to different cultures, people, etx. LI.. not so diverse. LI quiet and peaceful. Manhattan's filled with noise and air polution, taxis everywhere you turn and much too crowded. there's its bad and good in everything and eveyrwhere but of course, this is dependent on the parents' role to benefit the child's mind and growth.
i must say that living in the city is very costly. as if we don't know this . I used to live in the city a few years ago. and for the same reasons - shorter commute, easily exposed to museums, restaurants, culture and not to mention shopping! i now live in brooklyn where i'm originally from. the commute's an hour. i'm used to it now. it doesn't even phase me. plus i'm paying chump change as opposed to my last rental.
in the end, i hope you and you FH do remain in LI. i mean with all that you've written, living in LI is more realistic. my hub and i've discussed this also and we agree with many of you on safety, better education and more room in your home. hopefully we'll become long islanders in the next year or two.
good luck.

Are you in a good School district? I don't know if your LI apt is big enough for kids now - but you may want to use the waht about kids angle - I grew up in the city, but my dad lived in LI - I loved being able to go in the backyard and play, instead of waiting for my mom to take me to the park (which she rarely did anyuway...)
Also, the school system is just better in LI - I had to go to private school in the city necause my mom wasnt too thrilled with the district in nyc...

Re: NWR: Grrrr... FH is obessed with moving to NYC
I always said that I would never live in the city but I like playing there and that's what we do.
30 minutes from the city is nothing and he can still go out and have a good time. He is sounding a little off base with his timeline. He's getting married and the single scene in Manhattan is fun and stuff but not a steady diet of it! One of our friends who lives in Rockville Center is moving to the city because the single scene is better for him there. He works in Manhattan as well, it makes sense for him.
My dh used to do that with his single friends and it used to piss me off to no end. He didn't go for the scoping-he went because his friends were all single and did that. Hmm..I wonder why his married friends weren't out in the city in the bars too often..maybe because they are married! I don't know if your FH is thinking this way or not. Is he just tired of partying in the city and then having to take the train home instead of just crashing? That does stink, but it's not the end of the world if he stops to consider your situation. Yours is just a little more important than that.
Mostly, I go out in the city with one or two girlfriends from work for dinner, but I love going home to my 4 bedroom 2 bath house in LI that I pay the same as a 1 bdroom in the city. Even though I work there, we live in LI and DH works in LI-I wouldn't have it any other way.

Re: NWR: Grrrr... FH is obessed with moving to NYC
I hate to play devil's advocate, but here it goes...(this is just an opinion)
You two are starting your life journey together and soon your family planning will be under way. Life is too short to think about the 'what ifs'... if not now, then when? The future is charging at you full speed but LI isn't going anywhere.
The city is beaming with energy, forward thinking, and wonderful opportunity for a high quality of life, no matter what the size of your apartment. The Manhattan school system is in need of a good counselor, that could be you.
I wouldn't want the burden of knowing that I would be standing in the way of something my FH always dreamed of doing. Your marriage shouldn't end his desire to reach beyond. This is really the perfect time to move because you don't have anything tying you down.
It is a much better life when we are met with challenges because it is then that we grow. It is when we stand still that one becomes weak because there is no hill to climb.
I say go for it, you can always move back to LI. And who knows, you may end up loving it and decide to raise your family in the city. Afterall, NYC is the greatest city in the world.

I say move to the city.........I'm so jealous of people who live in the city........it's such a great experience. My brother in law and sister in law lived in Greenwich Village for about 6 years before moving to CA last year. They miss the city so much! You might end up liking it. I say give it a try. Easier said than done though.

Re: NWR: Grrrr... FH is obessed with moving to NYC
I live in the city and have for five years. FH and I own an apartment and while it is fun and exciting to be here, it can get tiring....also, it is more expensive than you can even imagine. If you have the $$ go for it...that's pretty much what it comes down to.

Re: NWR: Grrrr... FH is obessed with moving to NYC
Let's just swap mates! I want to move back to the city but my DH does not, even though he is the one who works there. I compromised for him and I know we won't be moving to the city. However, I have already lived there and I got to experience it.
Seriously, though, your FH should look at your perspective. If you like working in schools on Long Island, you might not like working in schools in the city. Every teacher I know says it's much different.
