Apparently, the MTA fares are going up, it's official. My company just sent out this e-mail,
Please be aware, MTA transit fares are increasing in 2005.
Effective January 1, 2005 – MetroNorth Connecticut Line Effective February 27, 2005 – NYCT (Buses and Subways) Effective March 1, 2005 – MetroNorth non-Connecticut Lines
We have to update our pre-tax transportation deductions by the end of this week, but but as usual, the LIRR website isn't helpful at all and nothing is mentioned about new fares. Does anyone know where I can find info on what the new LIRR fares will be? So I can know how much more money I'm going to have to pay for crappy antiquated service that should have been updated DECADES ago........ Grrrrrrrrr - Can I say that I HATE THE LIRR just one more time??? Thanks for any help!!

I'm pretty sure that the LIRR is being raised 5%. It's B*llsh*t though!! They just raised them last year 25%!!! They need to clean house and figure out what's going on! I was also told that the conductors make 6 figure salaries!!!! OMG! Come on!

Do you have a link? Does that mean the subway is going up to $2.50? Shyt if thats the case... that means the express bus goes up to $5.00. Now that is getting unreasonable.

just what we needed to hear........
metro north fares going up this much, when my salary basically stays the same with a piddly raise every year that hardly keeps up with the rising costs of commutation.

This is why I drive in to work every day. Piece of cake.
My FW wants a house... but somehow I don't see it happening. Why should I double my commute time... and quadurple my commute expense for a house?
Talk about a quality of life hit.

Felicia, that's my biggest gripe - I hardly make enough as it is with my crap yearly raise! We were only allowed a max of 4% this year, and that was up from last year's 3%!!! I was glad I got the whole 4 this year, but I can't really enjoy it with this stupid fare hike - AGAIN!! I'm so angry about this, but there doesnt seem to be anything that anyone can do about it....... Katie Lapp makes over 300,000 a year but WE have to pay morefor these decrepit trains?!?!?!? Infuriating!!!!!

They make enough.
And somebody is f'ing up that company's financials bigtime. How can a company that takes in that much cash be so broke? I wouldn't be surprised to see them do an 'Enron' at some point.
Somebody in the MTA needs to be locked up IMO.

So we basically never seen any extra money
Insurance goes up, transporation goes up....I got a 5% raise I don't think I will see more than 5 extra bucks!!

Yup. Nothing would start off the New Year better.... than to see some a$$hole MTA executive being led off in handcuffs for embezzeling money.
I am patiently waiting for this.

I am feeling the pain, too. I work two jobs, just to pay for my commute.
I don't think the MTA employees should be making min wage, but there is no reason why a monopoly should have money troubles. There is just poor money management going on.
If I did my job as poorly as the MTA (lateness, broken down trains, etc) I would be fired. Instead, they keep chugging along.

Juliet, I totally agree with you, I feel like I really need to have a second job right now just to afford this hike on top of my already existing expenses and I won't even get started on the feeble attempts to pay off my debt!! I just feel so anxious every time I think about it - WHY can't the MTA be audited? What's stopping an investigation similiar to what Enron went through? I don't believe for one second that ANY of our money is being put to good use, but for some reason, everything is okay???? It's all a big scam and coverup if you ask me!

And our measly publishing salaries just make things worse. I want to scream everytime I see the LIRR charge on my credit card. What am I paying for?

Re: 2005 MTA Fare Increase
I can not stand the MTA. How in God's name are they always late? Especially the trains! There is no one but the LIRR on the LIRR tracks. Who is causing congestion- the LIRR! It is the most inefficiently run organization I have ever seen.
Metro North is better than the LIRR, but it's all awful.
Often when I am standing on my train (why would I get a seat at $175 a month) with nine other people standing with me, I think, there is over $20,000 in annual revenues just standing here in the vestibule, what are they doing with all of this money! (I'm an accountant, I think in revenues)
For that amount of money, the very least I should get is a seat on the train (and not in the middle seat that is the most uncomfortable seat to sit in- I'd rather stand).
I am so glad that I am moving to North Carolina and can finally stop funding that mess!
