*<3* QOTD 8/18 *<3*

Original post by KatieG2010

We all would not be here is we weren't in love with our fiances and vice versa. What would you do if your family firmly disapproved of your boyfriend/fiance and told you that you had to choose between your family or the love of your life... Who would you choose?

(If you don't think this is a fair question let me know and I'll change it.....)

i also think that we woudnt have made it this far if our friends and family didnt approve buuuutttt if they didnt approve and it was because of religion or race I would have chose him over them

i also think that if my family and friends didnt like him, it wouldnt have lasted long enough for us to get engaged... i probably would have still tried to see him but it would probably get too hard with my fam... luckily, everyone loves fh

This did happen to us (not with my immediate family, but aunts, uncles and frandma). We were all very close but they did not want me to get married b/c FH is black....

Since there reasons for not wanting this to happen were so stupid I said 'so long' and didn't speak to them for months. It finally got so bad for them that they have 'accepted' it and we see each other for family events

Funny question....I dated a guy and lived with him and was talking about marriage....and long story short it didnt work out. I come to find out after that all my friends and some of my fam thought he was totally wrong for me, but noone said anything!!!!!

The only way they would disapprove of someone is if they really were a piece of sh!t to me.

If my family disapproved of the current incarnation of FH I'd tell them to shove it. FH is soooooo good to me, he treats me like gold, even when I don't deserve it.

hmm tough question, I think it probably would have caused such a problem in the very beginning of the relationship that we never would have lasted long enough to get engaged.

i agree!!

My dad was the only one who didnt approve of FH when we first started dating but that didnt stop me from dating him. Now they are like best friends lol

Re: *<3* QOTD 8/18 *<3*

I was raised in a very liberal household. My parents' only requirement was that the person I was with had to treat me very well and respect me.
They didn't care who I was with...race, religion, gender...all that didn't matter to my folks. As long as the person was good to me.

So, if my parents didn't approve, then I'd know that THAT was their true reason - disrespect from the other person - and I'd start to seriously question the relationship.

That being said, for awhile it looked like FH would be in the predicament of choosing between me and his family. He was going to choose me...but we decided it would be better to take a million baby steps towards a good relationship with his mom than to completely cut things off. Things get a teeny bit better each week, it seems. And everyone is happier.

I don't know my family has yet to meet a boyfriend of mine they didn't like. The ones I knew they wouldn't like I never introduced to them so you know it couldn't of gone far

Ok....I have to say that agree w/what practically everyone is agreeing w/...that if that was the situation, we would not have gotten to the engagement. My ex is a perfect example of that, neither my father nor step-mom had any concern w/him or any desire to get to know him. This bothered me b/c I had an amazing relationship w/his mom
and really wanted my parents to have that type of relationship w/him. Well finally I wised up (and I'm grateful to my parents for allowing me to figure out on my own)that he was not the one for me.

With FH they slowly got to know him while his parents jumped full throttle into a wonderful relationship w/me. I think we as a couple could survive if my parents didnt like him b/c my parents would of '****** it up' as long as he was good to me. Now, if it was his parents that didnt like me, well that would be a totally different situation and I'm not sure I could deal w/that.

i think the answer has a lot to do with who you are parents and the kind of parents they were to you before their dissaproval. if theyve been parents who never steared you wrong, also people who have always set a good example by their actions and choices the answer if going to be differnt imo if they havent set a good example themselves and also if they have always dissaproved of everything in your life without giving it a chance.

for me, as much as i love my family, my parents never really approved of anything i did in my life it seems. i know they are parents but it was always questioning my decisions even after i proved to be a reponsible adult/person.

soooo, unless my fh was abusive or had cheated or something and thats why they dissaproved which would be understandble, i have to say that i would go against their wishes and still be with my fh/

Well, you can't force your child not to marry someone. My grandparents warent's thrilled when my mom married my 'father' for many valid reasons, but she did anyway and they accepted it. The marriage didn't last and they were right all along about him. Now some parents though think NOONE is good enough for their child, especially mothers and their sons. So if I was a guy and my mom or dad just didn't like my gf/fiancee for no valid reason then I would say too bad so sad. I would marry my FH even if my family didn't like him, but they love him so I don't have that problem
