Re: 411 on Puppymills..

My FI used to be an investigator for the ASPCA. He saw some awful stuff. He eventually quit because it was just so difficult.

He did a raid on a puppymill. As they were searching the property, they found an old (approximately 10 year old) beagle that was forced to live outside. She was fed nothing but stale bagels. The owner basically ignored her because she was too old to keep breeding. There was no way to know how many puppies she was forced to give birth too. My FI fell in love with her and ended up adopting her. She had so many medical problems because she was not properly cared for.

The amazing thing was despite the fact she had a miserable life before FI rescued her, she was the most gentle, loving creature I've ever met. And she adored my FI (and he adored her). She lived with FI for about 8 years before she had to be put to sleep because she blew out the ligaments in her hind legs. We always said she had a miserable first 10 years of life, but was spoiled rotten the final 8 years.

Unfortunately, the laws relating to puppymills are rather lax. The guy who owned the beagle had all the animals taken away from him during the raid, but he was basically slapped on the wrist and then was eventually given back some of the animals and he was back in business. I don't know if he still is

Re: 411 on Puppymills..

Even the pet shops themselves can be pretty bad.

Once, I was looking at the puppies and one got his head stuck in the cage door and was getting strangled. I had to YELL for the people working at the store to open the cage and help him (it was behind those glass walls that everyone looks through).

The girl came running and saved the dog, but it totally freaked me out...

Re: 411 on Puppymills..

those stories make me SOOOO mad. we NEED stricter laws on this kind of stuff. i wish all pet shops were forced to close down.

frosti... i think that beagle KNEW how lucky he was to be rescued and was so grateful.... thats why IMO some rescued dogs make such good pets... they appreciate everything

Note*
two of the VERY worst pet shops on Long Island are:

Yuppy Puppy & Puupy DEpot

(every week they have TONS of garbage bags on dead puppies)
