$5 To dance with the bride

$5 To dance with the bride

My coworker is getting married in August and she told me that when her cousin got married a few years ago, she charged guests $5 to dance with the bride, and she raised about $800 towards her honeymoon. Has anyone heard of this being done?

meh I wouldn't do that, I couldn't imagine charging people to celebrate and dance with me

I have heard of this.. never been to a wedding that did this.

I think its a little tacky personally. no offense to people who plan on doing this. I just feel like people that are there are there b/c you wanted them to. the money to dance is a little weird

I could see something like that being more of a bachelorette party thing

I've heard of it being done at eparties or jack & jill parties to raise money for the wedding. They usually call it the dollar dance. It's not really a NY thing, and it's kinda considered gauche. But it's your wedding, so do whatever you want.

this sounds like the money dance that we spoke about a few days ago. i think most of us voted that it was tacky unless it is something that is part of your culture

really? i have never heard of anything like that before... i could see wedding guests getting irritated if you asked them to pay for a dance with the bride

ETA: not to mention how much time that would take away from your ability to have fun and enjoy your wedding.. $800 means she had to dance with 160 people!! that is one tired bride

I have never heard of this and my hubby is hispanic and he never mentioned anything about that. I am going to have to ask him about this later.

IMO it's a bit tacky; I mean, you're invited these people to come celebrate, and it's already expected that a gift be given, so it seems a bit inconsiderate of your guests to expect them to pay to dance/spend time with you. But that's just me.

i've seen this done at bachelorette parties - for fun.

but never for a wedding - people are already shelling out money to give as a gift and they have to pay to dance with you too? i think thats so tacky.

in PA, where I live, this is something you see any everyyyy siiiingglleeee wedding you go to. at least in western pa. but its not called the 5$ dance, just the dollar dance....and a fun song is played, everyone dances with the bride for like 30 seconds....and then they take a shot of whatever type of alcohol is provided...

ive never been to a wedding where is wasnt done, honestly

and its not like your telling your guests, give me money if you wanna dance...its not lke that at all...some guest dont give anything and still join in.. its just fun.

Re: $5 To dance with the bride

DEFENITLY seen it at every Hispanic wedding i have been too... (i am hispanic also)

We call it the dollar dance, however, no-one really gives dollars (guest actually give more, but its not mandatory). Some MC's and guest have made it really funny. As some guest go up and give their Credit Cards and the mc joke that is expired ect...

I guess we are prob goign to do it, becuase all previous cousins and friends weddings have all done it and all the guest love it....

My FH and I always give 20$ to dance with the bride and groom, and the closee friends and family give more... We dont see it as tacky becuase its like tradition to us
