My coworker is getting married in August and she told me that when her cousin got married a few years ago, she charged guests $5 to dance with the bride, and she raised about $800 towards her honeymoon. Has anyone heard of this being done?

DEFENITLY seen it at every Hispanic wedding i have been too... (i am hispanic also)
We call it the dollar dance, however, no-one really gives dollars (guest actually give more, but its not mandatory). Some MC's and guest have made it really funny. As some guest go up and give their Credit Cards and the mc joke that is expired ect...
I guess we are prob goign to do it, becuase all previous cousins and friends weddings have all done it and all the guest love it....
My FH and I always give 20$ to dance with the bride and groom, and the closee friends and family give more... We dont see it as tacky becuase its like tradition to us
I guess if it is tradition and the guests expect it, that's one thing. But, if its not tradition, then I don't think its a good idea because in that context then it does look tacky.

If this is the tradition in your culture than it's ok. But otherwise, I think it's tacky and I don't think guests will appreciate it very much.

Yeah i def agree.. (that it will look tacky if this has not been done before in your family) we are having about 260 guest and about 70% share the same nationality with us, but the other 30% will prob think it was tacky.. but ohwell.. cant satisfy everyone

I think this would be fun at the bacheloette party. I think people would go for it out at bars...

In some areas it's totally normal, accepted and expected. The NYC area is not one of them.

ITA. I think it's tacky too. I do like the money factor, but I'm nothing special where guests would need to spend money to dance with me. Unless that money was donated to charity.....

Re: $5 To dance with the bride
I saw that! I don't think they were giving the money to dance with the bride though. It's a mediterranean thing maybe b/c Arabic people do the same thing at weddings, your closest relatives usually throw money on the couple or they tape bills together and tie it around the couple. It's cute but never something someone asks for in exchange for a dance or anything..
