7-27-01: Stuff I forgot

Just some things I should have mentioned in my review yesterday: Hair was Margaret from Hair Phazes in Massapequa. She did an awesome job-exactly what I wanted. She came to the house, too, and didn't charge an arm and a leg. I would definitely recommend her, esp. for up dos. I bought my dress off the rack from Davids, but I got the alterations done at Helens in Commack (part of Wedding World.) They were not cheap, but they did a great job. The dress needed a lot of work, too (weight loss) but it fit me like a glove when they were done. Ask for Toala. The girl's dresses were also from a place called Helens, but this was a different one-it's in the Bridal Building in Manhattan on the 12th floor. I have to say I would not recommend them. I had 6 girls and I believe all of them had problems-nothing major, but one of them had to go back FOUR times for alterations they decided needed to be done in the first fitting, as if they could only do one alteration per visit. I believe 2 or 3 of them had problems with the adornments not being sewn on tight enough, another's was way too tight in the shoulders, and the one from out of state, forget it, hers was a mess, as if they didn't care since they didn't have to deal with it. I should mention that they custom make the dresses so there really shouldn't be that many problems. On a final note: I can't go into detail here, but I must mention that we were on a tight budget and to get around that, we got creative. Believe it or not, we made all of the following ourselves: Favors Bell Decorations Programs Pew Bows Centerpieces Flower Girl Baskets and probably other things that I can't remember. If you're willing to ask for help and put the time in-you can do it! You'll save a ton of $ and add the personal touch. Any questions on what we did or how we did it, please don't hesitate to ask. Good luck to all!

Centerpieces and Favors

I think just about everything we bought came from Michael's. Centerpieces: We ended up doing 2 silk roses 'floating' in 8' glass bowls. They were actually anchored at the bottom by their stems, which were inserted into a small piece of styrofoam at the bottom of the bowl, but they looked like they were floating b/c leaves and petals hid all of the underpieces. It's hard to explain but it looked very nice, especially on our oblong tables. We also considered silk flower arrangements (which my mom is really good at but you can have Michaels do them too)and a pillar candle surrounded by a ring of flowers. (I'm sure you've seen it.) Favors: We did homemade soaps (easy to make)in the shape of small hearts in each of our six colors. (We did a rainbow wedding: Pale pink, peach, ice blue, sage green, butterscotch, lavendar, yes, I had 6 girls who each wore one color.) We put the 6 soaps in a box from the Invitations by Dawn catalog and gave one to each couple. We also considered bags of gourmet tea since we're both tes drinkers but we eventually decided the soaps made a really nice presentation. (Which they did, we got a lot of compliments.) I hope that's all clear. Whatever you do, have fun with it!

How did you make the soap?

You can get a kit, but since we couldn't find one that met our needs we ended up buying blocks of glycerin, red, yellow, and blue dye to make the different colors, and the four scents we could find (all at Michaels.) Oh, and the molds, too. On the back of the package of glycerin they give you directions. It's easy and fun-well, fun if you're into that sort of thing:-)
