8 Days until the due date and...

8 Days until the due date and...

...according to my Dr. we are making no progress whatsoever. The baby has not dropped, I am not dilating - NOTHING. And on top of this the dr. told me that since the baby is not progressing into position the way he would like, he wanted to let me know that it doesn't look good at this point for a ******l delivery. He thinks the baby may be too big for my pelvic area - and I may need a c-section. He did say that this could all change overnight and with first babies it is very hard to tell but he wanted me to be prepared. He said he would never leave me to labor for hours and hours when I just may not be able to do this. He estimates the baby at at least 8 pounds - thanks to my husband's families giant baby genes!!

Now, to tell the truth I am very disappointed. I cried on the way home from the dr. I know that this could all change by my next appointment but I am so bummed about the whole thing. I know that whatever is best for the baby and for me is the best route to take, but part of me just feels let down that I went through this whole experience for 9 months and may not be able to experience labor and delivery the way I pictured. And the recovery time after a c-section is so different from a 'regular' delivery...I am bummed. My DH is trying to keep me positive with thoughts of how things may change in the next week, and I am trying too, but it's really bringing me down.

Re: 8 Days until the due date and...

I just went through what you are going through almost 4 weeks ago. After 9 months of thinking that I would deliver natural we had to be induced with a c section 3 weeks early because of his size. He was 10 pounds 3 ounces at 37 weeks. Yes I was upset, and very disapointed. There were times that I would just cry by hearing the word c section. I wanted a second opinion. My dh thought I was nuts. I later realized it was for the safety of the baby and one thing that I did not want was to be in labor for 30 hours only to have an emergancy c section. Also now a days just because you have one c section does not mean that the next one will be on as well. FM me with any questions or if you need to talk........The recovery period is different but in the end you still have your wonderful charming infant and it makes everything worth while.

Hi Lee...I am sorry to hear that you may need to have a c-section. But remember, no matter how your little one comes into this world, you are still a GREAT mommy! Please do not feel like a failure in any way. Do what is best for you and your baby!

My little girl is 3 weeks old today...I haven't posted my birth story yet unfortunately (been SO busy) but I just wanted to let you know that I was in labor for THREE full days and pushed for THREE full hours. It turns out that my pelvis really wasn't big enough for her to pass through and I suffered for it. My doctor needed to use the vacuum extractor to get her out...I almost ended up with an emergency c-section. It was really scary and traumatizing, not to mention PAINFUL! If I were you, I would opt for the c-section if your doc really thinks the baby may not fit. It is not worth the risk. JMO! Good luck with everything...your baby will be here so SOON!!!

Don't give up hope just yet. Are there any other doctors in the practice for a 2nd opinion? I ALWAYS get 2nd opinions to hear what other doctors might think about the situation.
and in the end the most important thing is you holding a healthy baby.

Try to be positive about either experience. The most important thing is having a healthy baby. I wish you all the best.

Re: 8 Days until the due date and...

My SIL is going through this RIGHT NOW! She was scheduled for a C-Section at 8am this morning, for the same reasons. Today is her due date but the baby was not progessing at all and at her appt yesterday they said his head was so big it wouldn't even fit on the sonogram/ultrasound. They estimated his bone structure to be about 9pounds and that he probably was 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 pounds!

It's scary and dissappointing but you're baby will be here soon -- and there's always a chance that things will progress and you wont have to have a C-Section.

My friend just had a baby a month ago today and he was 10 lbs and she pushed for 2 1/2 hours and they had to use the vacuum too.

Just think -- either way -- you'll be a mommy really, really soon!!!! GOOD LUCK and BEST WISHES!

Re: 8 Days until the due date and...

Lee,

I went through this with Brandon. I was almost 2 weeks past my due date I wasn not dilating, he was not moving into position and I was going to be induced. The Dr. decided to do another sonogram before he gave me the pitocin. It showed that the baby was big and he anticipated that I could have a problem trying to deliver him. I opted to have the section and have not regretted it at all. My concern was what was going to less traumatic for the baby

Re: 8 Days until the due date and...

Thank you all so much for your support. I knew I could count on you all. My rational brain tells me that whatever is best for the baby is best all around, it's just getting past the idea of 'missing out' on something that I'm still working on. I'm getting more used to the idea, especially hearing stories about what people went through trying to deliver a baby that was just too big for them.

I'm keeping my chin up, washing baby clothes, and wishing that the baby comes soon!! to you all!! Let the countdown begin...

wish you the best lee...

don;t let the DRs words linger though. It is VERY hard to do,,.,but I wished he had chsoen his words a bit better. Failure to progress is one of the top reasons drs perform c sections...and they are not always needed.

are you going to have a midwife or doula with you?
I want you to know that they both made a BIG difference in my delivery. If you can, please consider having a doula with you. They can advocate for you, make you more comfortable, and explain the options to you in a more 'non threatening..I am your partner ' kind of way.
I am only wishing the VERY VERY best for you, hubby and baby...so pls do not take this the wrong way...but sometimes...SOMETIMEs they say failure to progress, baby is too big..and what are you SUPPOSED to feel when they tell you that? that you are failing....lets go in there and get this baby out. ( an easy procedure for them to do...but this is MAJOR surgery- you will have 2 incisions. One outside your belly on the skin and one in your uterus)

if it is medically necessary, then by all means go for it.
if it is failure to progress, there ARE other options besides c section. Walking the halls, visualization, deep breathing, changing postions, massage...ALL helpful. I know that they seem like MINIMAL ways to help but sometimes that is ALL you need. We woman are very powerful...and our minds and wills are strong too.

again, if it is medically necessary, then I'm right in your corner. It doesn't mean that you are ANY LESS A MOM by having a c section. YOU ARE A GREAT MOM! ...

I just wanted you to know that there are OPTIONS out there...I am sending you a big, big hug
We are pulling for you , daddy and baby.
do not fret- just get more info on your options so YOU both can make a choice.

Best of luck to you!
