9/11 wedding date?

9/11 wedding date?

What does everyone think about a 9/11 wedding? Do you think that people would think that I am being inconsiderate?

I think it all depends on your guest list and their experience with the day. If someone close to you lost someone that day I would try to avoid it.

i'm not sure what to think of it, I had the date offered to me for 2004. At first I was turned off by it, but from vendors and halls that I've spoken to,that hasn't stopped brides from scooping up the date. Especially 2004 since it was a Saturday.

I honestly think its not that bad... not as bad as you were to do it last year. If it is really convenient for you, and you save money, than go for it.
The only thing you should consider is weather or not you are inviting people who's family died that day. Than.. I probably wouldn't do it, because for them, its a day of mourning, not one to celebrate.

I dont know, we had it offered to us for 05 for a really discounted rate, and as much as the money sounded great, we couldn't bring ourselves to do it...That date forever will be a somber day for me....FH my parents and I were all in the city that day, my mother steps away from the Trade Center, and I just couldn't do it....that is my honest opinion, it's different for everyone

It should be fine. It may even give people something happy to think about on that day as well.

Thanks everyone! I honestly felt alittle sad about celebrating on that day but my parents felt that I should feel that way. The main reason why I was considering it was because the weather should still be nice. I am having the ceremony on the grounds and the weather and having flowers was very important.

I personally wouldn't do it- it just conjurs up too many bad feelings.. but I live in the city, and was here when it happened- I will never forget that day. I also wouldn't want it to be my anniversary date. But you have to do what feels right for you.

i wouldn't do it - but everyone has a different way of looking at things. The phrase '9/11' conjurs up so many images and feelings...

I wouldn't do it. No matter how happy people will say your day is, that date will always hold a cloud over it.

Honestly, I agree with most of the other girls and if it were me, I probably wouldn't do it.
BUT, this is YOUR decision and if it 'fits the bill' no one should stop you.
My parents were going to get married on December 7, but out of respect for their fathers (who were both Veterans of WWII) they went for December 8 instead. Same sentiment. Dates of infamy.

I have to agree with most of the ladies here, 9/11 for me will always be a day that brings back only pain. But life does go on but for us that day is somber.

I think you have to do what you're comfortable with...but for me personally, I could never do it on that date. To me '9/11' is more than just a date - it's a tragic event. I could never have that as my wedding anniversary. JMO.

I was in the city that day - 6 blocks from the WTC. I still get upset when the news programs run that scene with the huge dust cloud and people running down Broadway since that was me (and my coworkers) running for cover.

However, that being said, I would love to attend a wedding that day instead of memorial services. I spent the afternoon of 9/11/02 watching the memorial service on t.v. and then took a plane to Italy in the afternoon with a good friend. I am trying not to stay somber on 9/11 but I did not lose any close friends or family. 9/11/03 and 9/11/04 were spent watching the memorials too.

ETA - there are various dates in history that are somber for whatever reason so you have to decide if you can handle that. For us, July 24 is a date we could never have since FI's mom died of leukemia on July 24, 1984.

Especially the last paragraph I agree with. Brides have no qualms about getting married on Labor Day or on Dec 7th which was Pearl Harbor (up until the WTC attacks the greatest attack ever on our soil and greatest loss of US lives).

I am getting married on July 4th. I do not plan on turning my wedding into a Red, White and Blue parade but as an American who is especially thankful for her freedom not to mention it. I am planning that the Rev. say something in the blessing. If it wasn't for a country such as ours and the freedoms we enjoy FH and I would not be allowed to get married. We are interfaith and he is divorced.

Re: 9/11 wedding date?

(totally honest answer and I apologize in advance if I offend some people)

Since you asked for our opinions - I would say don't do it - way too many memories - the wound is still too fresh. I dont think a wedding on Pearl Harbor day is appropriate either.

If I were to get an invitation for an affair on 9/11 I would be shocked- and then, to be totally honest, I'd be angry. I'd think that the bride and groom were having it on that day because they got a good price. . . I'm sorry, to be so blunt, it's just my honest opinion. I knew people who died on that day and maybe it's still too personal for me.

I think even if people didnt have a problem with the date they would still have a conversation about it, after receiving an invitation. Do you want people talking about whether or not you made the right choice?

The decision is yours but the day belongs to everyone as a day of mourning and for many people they are not ready or able to do anything on that day other than remember the fallen.

Re: 9/11 wedding date?

I'm getting married on Labor Day weekend- the Sunday (Monday is actually labor day). Labor Day isn't connected to any sort of attack or war, 'it constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country' according to the dept. of labor. This is a happy day- and I see absolutely nothing wrong with have a wedding celebration for a happy day.

9/11, on the other hand, is a sad and mournful day. IMO, I wouldn't have a wedding that day- or attend any function of that sort. When we first started looking to book a hall we considered Sat. 9/10/05. We decided against this date, because many of our guests will be traveling into NY from out of town. Since people expressed concern about flying home the next day (being 9/11), we decided to have it the weekend before- and avoid 9/11 as much as possible

I was here and honestly feel differently, that the very best thing to do is to celebrate and live and survive in the face of those that would harm us. What is more of a statement of honoring those attacked than to begin new families and cherish their memories. I do think it would be especially touching if there was a moment of remembrance somewhere during the evening, but I do understand that different folks have different takes on this one.

Not at all...for some reason people think its unappropriate to celebrate that day...it was a tragic event, but it made everyone realize how special live really is...and what better to represent it than a wedding!

Personally, I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't want my wedding day and anniversary to be tied to such a sad event.
