Just read a letter inside a Christmas Card, from my Husband's Amish Sister. While she addressed the card to both of us, the letter was to my Husband. For the most part, it was a nice letter. Evidently, my Husband told her in the letter he sent to her for her Birthday, that I was really enjoying my computer. My Husband is really proud of me and my computer abilities, learned so far, in a year's time. At the end of her letter, she addressed the computer topic, that Husband raised. She said, 'It was interesting to hear what Mary can do with her computer but with what we see in the paper there is also much evil going on with computers. I trust that Mary does not get involved in a 'chat rooms' etc' !!!!!!!!!!!!! First of all, I don't appreciate it that she speaks to Ben as if I'm not aware of what she's saying, and I don't like the hint of Amish subjection to the man thing going on in her statement, ie., speaking to my Husband, so he tells me to be careful with those chat rooms, instead of directly telling me her concern. Secondly, I get indignant at the notion, that I would be doing anything 'evil' with my computer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now, ladies, I think you know me better than that, in the brief time I've posted on this site. It's too bad, my own Sister-in-law doesn't know me better!!!!!!!! Hope you guys don't mind my venting a bit. Mary MOB

It is slightly amusing.....you have been caught up in the evils and addiction that is LIW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mary, don't take offense to it. I'm not one to criticize anyone's beliefs or religions...but I think Amish is a bit out there. They don't like to be judged but will judge other.....not Kosher!!!

Wow that is something Mary!
Speaking as a computer teacher, it is great that you learned so much within a year. I have several adult students (I teach at a Queens recreation center that caters to ages 6 and up) that catch on very quickly and they all come to me and say 'I know nothing about computers'. I'm also glad that your husband is very supportive and proud of your skills
As for your SIL its amazing what others can think when reading the newspapers..considering the fact that you're caught up in the 'evils' of the LIW addiction..

Amanda, I had to wonder if my Husband told her I'm on a site, talking to ladies. That's probably where she got that notion! My Husband will chuckle when he reads the letter. The Amish have some nice values, but they also have beliefs that don't make any sense, and aren't even Biblical!!!!!!! My Husband and I were just talking about their use of horse and buggies, as opposed to driving a car. They believe they're following GOD's way, but if they really want to travel God's way, from Biblical times, wouldn't it be via walking, or as my Husband said, 'By camel?' The Amish think it's sinful to drive a vehicle, but why is it ok to 'cause someone else to sin, by allowing them to to haul you around, when the distance is too great for horse and buggy???' Mary MOB
PS A camel in Lancaster county ....hmmmm

Hi Danielle!!!!! I kinda surprised myself!!!!! My interest in having a computer initially was for genealogical research purposes and to coordinate all my family pictures, and records. Then, Daughter, Donna, got me a digital camera, and the learning continued!!! But, Debi is the one who told me about LIW, and I'm glad she did!!!!!!!! I have met the most wonderful people, and they're not evil, thank you very much!!!!!!!! Mary MOB

That is really nice how you got started with the computer and research Mary. And you're right we're not evil Personally I'd be lost without LIW- so many things I wouldn't have known and questions that would have gone unanswered.

Re: A bit amused, and a bit annoyed!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Mary! I rarely post on 08 but let me be next to jump on the GOMARY bandwagon!!!
So I have an aunt who's a NUN (on my dad's side) and for 30+ years she's done the same thing to my mom (i.e. addressing letters to him, then passing on advice for her etc.) Oh and the BEST BEST part is that whenever she visited NY (she belongs to a convent in Wales) she'd be just FILLED with child-rearing advice for my mother... I can still hear her saying.... 'Now, Peggy... what you need to do is blahblahblahblah'... we all just tuned her out after that!
My mom's a cool cat and just ignored the whole thing, I'd say after 35 years it doesn't really bother her But it still irritates me...
There's a saying that there's ONE thing which dooms a man to ignorance.... and that's an attitude of 'contempt prior to investigation'. You should be SO PROUD of how far you've come in only one year!!!!!

Oh, Collette, thanks for your kind words!!!! You really do know where I'm coming from, as well as your Mom!!!!! This particular Sister, of my Husband, has never seemed friendly toward me, when we are together. The love is always for my Husband, which is strange, considering he left the Amish, and while his family still talks to him, they practice shunning, which involves a number of rules. Some of the other family members have been more cordial, but not this one Sister. I don't have a clue why!! Mary MOB
