A bit panicked...need help w. DJ selection

Hi girls, hoping to get some level headed advice here...I am not sure what I should be looking for in a DJ. We met w. one company, and the DJ has gotten good reviews here. FH is fine to book, but I feel like I should see a few companies before booking. FH is always ready to book on the spot, and says I obsess too much about every vendor (okay, this is true). This vendor did not have a video or anything, and since I have never seen them perform I am a bit concerned about boooking them blindly. Do most DJs show a video, or at least the equipment? Any suggestions on good companies that will make our wedding elegant, not like a NYC club? This DJ kept pushing a light show, that does not seem elegant to me. I thought the photographer would be the hardest vendor to book, but at least I saw their photos. Help!

Re: A bit panicked...need help w. DJ selection

We went by what the girls on this board said to get a few to meet with.
We went to two different DJs and we went with the person we were most comfortable with. We wanted someone to play great music and no talking(mc). Try to decide what style you want and you'll know by their personality if they fit the bill. Go with your instinct.
Good luck!

Edited to reccomend Spin Around Sound!

I'm not sure who you saw, but I'm using Invitation to Dance. They're great, and not pushy. We're getting the Standard light package. We wanted that, they'll go with whatever you're happy with. We're not getting the giveaways though. They take some money off if you don't want that.

We ae going with Let Us Entertain You. I had never seen them play but they were recommended by my gf. When we went to meet with them, they showed us a video, their giveaways, etc. We booked them because we were comfortable with them and they were very reasonably priced. Our package consists of giveaways (200 pieces), standard light show, bubble machine and costumes for the guests to wear.

Re: A bit panicked...need help w. DJ selection

I personally chose a dj that does not hand out plastic maracas and blow up guitars. My FH and I like the elegance of no bubbles, no light show, no cheesy MC. Our style is more of elegant fun....I wanted to avoid recreating my prom...so we chose someone not even on these boards who my reception hall recommended and he seems to fit what we want. We are going for just the dj...he will also make announcements, etc. So keep looking until you find what you really want!

Re: A bit panicked...need help w. DJ selection

I did not want a club atmosphere or any light show at all!! I wanted elegance and I really think that Spin Around Sound did that for me...

My uncle even commented on how he liked how they didn't talk too much...

Wedding vendors are salesmen(with some exceptions)...they have to be...but just know what you want and don't want and stick to your ground

michael at music by michael is great. I met with 5 DJ's and not one had a video, I don't think that is something to stress about. For me, it was all about clicking with the person, which I did with him. Good luck!

Re: A bit panicked...need help w. DJ selection

Thanks ladies, I am meeting w. a few other DJs next week, DJs unlimited and Spin Around Sound. For those that used either, did you get a light show? I saw that listed as included for both packets they sent me in the mail, dont know if I am interested in that as I mentioned before. Its good to hear that you girls were happy w. spin around sound, any feedback on DJs unlimited? They are my house vendor, so I am meeting w. them figuring that they know the room well.

Re: A bit panicked...need help w. DJ selection

I met with 5 DJ's and I'm down to two. I'm waiting for my FH to come in so we can make a final decision. The two that we are considering is Spin Around Sound, which is my first choice and Big Hits in East Meadow.

We want our wedding to be elegant, so I believe we aren't going with the give aways, i dont want it to be a new years eve party.

Re: A bit panicked...need help w. DJ selection

We went with Get In Tune DJs.We saw them at a showcase at the holiday inn in ronkonkoma in june they were so classey we booked them on the spot.We also booked there video ,and a perrcussionist for our reception and steel drums for the cocktail hr.I have also noticed they have some nice things said about them on this board. You can speak to Glen he is the owner and he is a sweet heart, and is not pushie at all he cares about all your details.Be careful with some of those companys i have noticed they will not promise you a certain DJ or emcee glen did. Also my photogrpher is Joanne Rempe Photography.Still looking for Limos.Hope i could help
