(06/04/04) OYSTER BAY - A first grader surprised friends and teachers Friday by showing up at school with eight bags of crack cocaine.
School officials say the 7-year-old boy brought the drugs to Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School and showed them to a friend. When a quick-thinking teacher found out what was happening, she confiscated the bags and told the principal. The principal then alerted Nassau County police.
According to detectives, the boy took the three grams of drugs from his kitchen table. Police also say the student's parents have denied ownership of the drugs, and that several adults were present Thursday night at household.
School officials have contacted child protective services and sent a letter home to parents about the incident. They say there are no accounts of other students coming in contact with the substance. The boy is still in his parents' custody while child services investigates.
