A long story and a poll....

Original post by AlliCatB

We had a 'situation' on our wedding day. I have a 'friend' from college who has a terrible eating disorder (bulimia and she's restrictive with her food) and a bit of a drinking problem.

People have reached out to her in the past, and to her family to fill them in (they live in another state) and everyone's in denial.

So go figure, open bar and she gets so hammered at my wedding (after not eating any of the food served) that by after dinner she was literally fall down drunk, fell multiple times down the steps to the RH and outside, where eventually she cracked her head open and cried like a baby with a bloody gash.

My friend's BF who knows this girl kept her away from me so I wouldn't get upset and I didn't actually see her until the party was over (and his shirt had blood stains).

She sent a text to me the day after saying, 'Sorry I was a hot mess with a head wound. Ha! So fun!!'

She also grabbed my uncle's *** when he walked passed her.

I, nor my family, find this funny. One our of mutual friends tried to talk to her about it and her answer was 'I'm an alcoholic, what do you expect?' Now I'm willing to admit she's obviously got a bunch of problems, but what do I do?

its a terrible situtaion---and i'm sorry you had this happen on your big day.

but as a person who has known alcoholism in her own family, its very hard to reach out to someone, who doesn't think they have a real problem. in a sad way, she needs to hit rock bottom first, on her own, before she will seek or want help. the fact that her behavior at your wedding didn't wake her up at all, kind of lets you know that she is in deep.

i would sincerely consider tryign to set up a type of intervention to confront her. have her family call a counselor or find a local Al-Anon or AA chapter to find out a way to go about this.

IMO, I would write a letter, or talk to her personally that what she did at your wedding was uncalled for. If she ignores it, it's her life and her decisions, and when she realizes (or her family realizes) she needs help, she'll reach out to you.

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do for someone who is self destructive and doesn't want help. Alcoholism is a very serious and difficult disease.

I would let her know that you noticed the changes in her behavior and that you are worried about her, and maybe speak to her parents about what happened at the wedding. Just make sure you bring it up in an 'I'm worried about you, this is serious' way, and not in a 'you ruined my wedding' way, or she'll only be defensive.

I totally agree...

it's tough but unfortunatly if she doesn't want help no matter what you do -- it isn't going to work.
