So what happens if someone died on a Wednedsay or Thursday? Do you just skip friday/saturday & pick up again, or just shorten it, or have the burial, and then wait until Saturday night to officially sit shiva?

Person dies Wednesday (ETA: or Thurs), you bury Thurs. or Fri. (before sundown), and sit Shiva until Shabbat begins. You resume sitting Shiva after Shabbat is over.

The same goes for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. DH's uncle died right before Yom Kippur and they sat shiva for a day or so before and after. What made it worse was that YK was right around Shabbat that week (or vice versa, I can't remember) and so the shiva just dragged on forever. I felt so badly for ILs, BIL, and of course DH.

You just start again Saturday night. There is no public mourning on Shabbat, but you still count the days. Shiva starts after the burial. So if a funeral is Thursday morning, the family would sit for the rest of Thursday, during the day on Friday, Saturday night, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, I believe.

Anyone who knows more than I do, please feel free to correct me!

Thank you both! I was just curious, since it was brought up.

Catholics have similar restrictions, especially with holidays. My friend's father died during Holy Week ( the week leading to Easter) and they couldn't dso anything untill after Easter, so the wake was Easter Sunday night, & Monday & the funeral ( Mass & burial) was Tuesday.
I had never heard of a wake being on Easter, but with the timing of when he died & getting the body to NY from FL, it was the earliest they could start.

normally we bury the person the next day. if there's some family members out of town, they'll wait a few days for everyone to arrive.
