A question about the Terri Sheivo story

Original post by heidla

Let's just say that her husband had left the decision to her parents and they decided to take out the feeding tube. Would you opinion on the situation change?

It just seems as if some people are more upset about the fact that the husband was allowed to make the decision and not the result of the decision itself.

I guess my point is- putting a standard on what is or is not acceptable living conditions is a very dangerous thing to do.. I don't think ANYONE has the right to say someone's life is or is not worth living- it is up to the individual. I guess that's a huge problem here- not REALLY knowing Terry's issue and her husband being so shady.

I think the line needs to be drawn when the person in question is no longer capable of making their decisions known.....

See, but I think that after they specifically told me: I want EVERYTHING possible (and, my mom is a nurse, so she knows all about PVS, and all of it) I would be murdering them, if I unhooked them, after being SPECIFICALLY told ' I want EVERY possible thing, no matter what.'

WELL You are right and i take that back...if it is their wish ...i agree follow it...I just don't think you or your family REALLY know the gravity of your decision...and THAT part i guess is SAD

No, we do understand the gravity. We would just make a different choice (well, actually, let's leave me out of this entirely because I *still* am not 100% sure on what I want)

Anway, My mom is a nurse and has worked with the brain damanged. My DH watched both is Aunt and his Father die very slow and painful deaths.

They both decided that they want EVERY possible intervention. Believe me, they are both very well informed. This is their choice. I don't thank that ANYONE can say whether it is right, wrong, under-educated, or over-educated.

They both feel like they would be committing suicide if they didn't try as hard as possible to live. And, they believe that suicide is a sin that they would be punished for.

I am not going to turn this into a religous debate, but I definitely understand their position.

I think we are all entitled to our opinion. Just because one of us wants to live or die, in this situation doesn't mean we are right or wrong.

But, what is wrong is letting someone die who would have wanted to live

if i remember my history lessons correctly- it was actually mostly all people in care facilities or those that didn't meet a certain standard.

I guess my point is- putting a standard on what is or is not acceptable living conditions is a very dangerous thing to do.. i don't care who you are talking about...you cannot compare anything with BRAIN DEAD> SO whatever comparison...you tried to make there was silly....

AND again...it is sad that some people would rather keep her that way...a vegetable..just because of a persona..

AGAIN...this isn't about her parents, it isn't about her DH....IT IS ABOUT HER!
WHo she is now...and if you think it is ok to keep everyone like that in a vegetative state well that is your opinion and i can at least respect that part....

BUT to keep her there because you think it just shouldn't have been his decision...THAT IS SICK IMO...

This is a tough thing that people will never agree on. It also has alot to do with people's own personal beliefs, and religion. If she was in a Catholic hospital they would have NEVER pulled that tube even if he wanted it. The mother also asked that she was able to have communion on Easter Sunday and the husband denied that too.. COME ON I mean she's going to die anyway.. what difference did that make?

I don't think life support (of any type) should be terminated unless all sides agree. (This being in the absense of any documentation based on what the patient wanted)

And, I don't think that someone who has already moved on should be able to decide if she lives or dies.

Just for argument's sake, what would this man do if Terri did make a full recovery? Would he leave his new family and be with her? I doubt it! Therefore, he should not have a say in whether she lives or dies.

SUE...IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HER HUSBAND AND EVERYTHING OT DO WITH HER CONDITION

HER CONDITION...IS WHAT IS IMPORTANT HERE

NOT HER HUSBAND NOT THE MONEY NOT THE DOCTORS....
TERRI!!!

So if terris parents said to let her go...that would be ok????

IMO, it would only be okay if: they all KNEW that she would have wanted it to be this way.

This issue is not that her parents just feel like keeping her alive, just for the sake of it. They truly believe that she would NOT have wanted to die. That's why they are putting up this fight.

Again, IMO, I don't think the husband is a reliable source. He was messing around a year after this happened. And, he didn't even MENTION that she would have wanted to die until 8 years later. I just don't believe that he's telling the truth.

That is the problem I personally have with this case. I believe in a person's right to die based on his/her quality of life. I just question Teri Schiavo's husband's motives, here. I do hope the courts have not made their decisions on the basis of his testimony of her wishes, alone.

This is exactly how I feel.

are you her?

no, then you don't know

Don...pleeeze now you are just wrong...

I don't need to be her to know that if you don't have a functioning cerebral cortex...YOU WILL NOT FEEL PAIN.....

IT IS A FACT!

First of all, this is NOTHING like Nazi Germany.... Hitler didn't gas retarded kids, he tried to wipe out a whole race of people. Thank you, for having read your statement comparing the two, I have now lost IQ points....

As for whether Michael Schiavo 'honored' his wedding vows - I truly feel that NO one other than God has the power to pass judgement here. NO ONE here knows WHAT they would do in this situation.

I'd like to add - I have never seen any proof that he supposedly abused his wife, AND it was just reported on the news that the 700,000 dollars for her treatment is just about gone so there goes that angle (insurance $$$).

Everybody is so insulted that he 'moved' on' get over it! Truth of the matter is - he lost his wife years ago and I can't imagine the agony of watching her languish in this state.

My problem is more with HIM than anything.

well then that is TRULY sad.....You would rather have her like that...living her life like that just because you THINK he is bad.

WHY is it that NONE of you are thinking of TERRI!

I don't believe that that is a way for anyone to 'live' because it is NOT living but merely existing. I've been in the position of Health Care Proxy & had to make some very difficult decisions regarding my former fiance's healthcare and it is not an easy thing to do but I made choices based on his wishes.

No one here is right or wrong- we all just have different beliefs- doesn't make anyone sick or wrong or right or whatever- we all have our own beliefs. I just can't believe how a group of people that normally get along can start getting so heated and attack one anothers' beliefs because we don't see eye to eye on an issue. I think this needs to be taken down a couple of notches. To those of you that believe in the right to life, great! For those of you that believe in a right to die, great! Can we all just agree disagree and respect one anothers' beliefs? I just personally feel that this is starting to head towards 'going too far . . .'

I agree with you that we may all be coming from a different emotional standpoint with our beliefs . . . . If I saw what you see daily, you are right- I probably would feel differently . . .
