A September 11th wedding??

A September 11th wedding??

What are your thoughts on getting married on September 11th? It is a Saturday this year and I have heard that some venues are offering discounted rates for the day. I didn't know if it was a really bad idea because of what happened on that day....but I also was thinking that getting married on that day can turn a somber day into a joyful one. My fiance said he doesn't really like the idea...but if it can save us some money it might be worth it. Any thoughts???

If your fiance doesn't like the idea, I wouldn't do it. The date has to be something both of you love. For most people, their anniversary becomes a really special personal date, but 9/11 already has so much meaning (especially to those of us touched by it) that it could be filled with more than just happy wedding memories. It's one thing if some of your guests have a problem with it, but if your FH feels that way, I would say shy away.

i agree.. this day makes me sad.. with the newspapers, media replaying the event allday and just friends and family who were affected by this tragic event... i personally would leave it alone and not book on this day..
good luck !

I wouldn't do it either. A few of my guest lost someone in 9/11 and do something special that day in remembrance of their lost one. I wouldn't want to infringe on their day.

I think we've had a thread similiar to this already.

I personally wouldn't do it, but that's jmo.

I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it either...Celebrating your anniversary, a happy occasion, on such a sad day wouldn't feel right to me. JMO

I understand the money thing - but my aunt now has her wedding anniversary as 9/11 - she was married back in 1982, but its a tough day for her to celebrate her wedding anniversary.

She never turns on the TV and she tries to just stear clear of anything about what happened but thats virtually impossible. Every year I call her to wish her a happy anniversary it's always 'yea - i guess so'

I would avoid it - i understand trying to turn a day as such into some thing a little bit happier by it being a wedding but no matter what the day will always be viewed by what happened.

After reading all of these posts it has begun to sound like a pretty bad idea. I think that I would probably regret it later on and I definitely DO NOT want that to happen! Thank you all for your input :)

i dont think there is nayhting wrong with it.but if u have any friends or family who were directly affected they might not want to go but other than that i dont think its wrong at all

personally if it was me..i would not want to just cause im always kinda sad on that day but if i was invited to a close friends wedding on that day it would not stop me from going

Just my opinion, but I definetly would not!! Its a very depressing day for many people and you want your day to be happy and joyful & also celebrating your anniversary every year you want to be happy and joyful, not on a depressing day. But it all comes down to your choice.

I wouldn't do it. I know me personally I still have a hard time on this day and I take the day off of work because I get so upset.

If your FH isn't feeling the idea, I wouldn't do it. You both have to agree on the date. Our RH originally was trying to give us that date at a REALLY good rate but we couldn't do it. Even with the great rate...

Re: A September 11th wedding??

I am in the minority here and I say if both you and FH can agree do it. Not because of financial reasons but my godson was born 9/11/2001 and I believe he has every right to celebrate his birthday. 9/11 hit very close to home for me. My sister went to school just across the street from the WTC, my dad worked there, and I was across the street and it was just the worst day ever. We all walked home from the city that day. But its a sad day and you are creating new memories on that day. One day can mean many things to many people. Write your own history. A wedding on 9/11 doesn't take away from the sadness of that day but an anniversary can also bring some joy into that day for you. I know it did for my friend Sarah they day her son was born so she now has something else to celebrate on that day.

We had guests lose someone in 9/11 so I wouldn't have done it. One of my mom's best friend's niece was 7 months pregnant, newly married. So sad.

I personally wouldn't do it. FH and I were both in lower Manhattan that day (separate places but both very close to the WTC). I'll always have memories of that day on every anniversary and so will he. So we wouldn't do it. BUT, I also wouldn't judge anyone for getting married on that day. It's a very personal decision.

I personally wouldn't do it because of the people lost that day. If you and your FH agree on it that's up to you
