What are your thoughts on getting married on September 11th? It is a Saturday this year and I have heard that some venues are offering discounted rates for the day. I didn't know if it was a really bad idea because of what happened on that day....but I also was thinking that getting married on that day can turn a somber day into a joyful one. My fiance said he doesn't really like the idea...but if it can save us some money it might be worth it. Any thoughts???
when we were looking at halls one of them was offering us a great deal on this day too & kept throwing things in as extras..but I just didn't feel right about it. Not to say you shouldn't but like some of the other girls said it's a sad day.

Re: A September 11th wedding??
I almost did it. We heard too that they gave deals for that day. Especially for the fact that it was a sat. I had no family or friends that were affected by the day, so it didnt bother me. Its been 9 years. I mean if you have a child born on that day, are you not gonna celebrate its bday. Unfortunately life moves on and it will never be a day ANYONE forgets. If it works out money wise and both you and you FH agree. Just do it. It is what it is at this point. We got some great deals for the 11th.. But we decided for a xmas wedding instead..

I completely agree. September 11th was one of the worst days in American history but life moves forward. When a loved one passes its painful but as time passes you heal and move past it. I know for me 9/11 does not carry the pain and hurt that it used to. Take a look at our lives look how far we have come since then. My childhood neighbors dad never came home after 9/11 and her brother was so depressed by it that he commited suicide but she has moved on and even for her and her family the initial sadnes they felt over losing her father is gone and the choose to embrace happier memories. I feel that a 9/11 wedding is an opportunity to give a whole new meaning to the day for you and your family. Instead of it being just the day when almost 3,000 people died it can now become the day she married the love of her life.

You can do whatever you like and what you are both comfortable with. I personally think that this is a tainted day and makes most people sad. If you or anyone else is thinking about having your wedding on this day because the halls are giving a discounted rate, just think that your wedding anniversary will be on a national day of remembrance and that it is a very sad day for many people not only within our country but in many countries as well as our own.

We were offered that date and considered it but decided against it. I personally don't want my wedding anniversary to share a date with such a somber event. JMHO

I wouldn't do it. If someone has a birthday on that day, that's not something that you can necessarily avoid or plan an exact day for. This is something that you are planning.
If you want to save on costs, I'd go for a Friday or Sunday instead.

Honestly if I got a wedding invitation for Sept 11th id think...seriously??? Not only that but I think most people would assume you got a great deal on that day. I just wouldnt do it. I wouldnt even consider it. I know some people say to write your own history and whatnot, and if your birthday or previous anniv. is on that day than you cant HELP it. But imo there SHOULD be days that we just take out to reflect, and remember... everyone just wants to forget and move on...i wouldnt want to share my anniversary with literally the worst day in new york history ESPECIALLY as a new yorker... JUST MY OPINION

Re: A September 11th wedding??
I wouldn't do it, but that's because my father and uncle were cops at the time (now retired) and the anniversary brings up the terrible memories of what they saw on that day and in the days, weeks, months afterwards.
But I wouldn't tell someone else not to.
My FH and I were looking to save $$$ as well, and were very flexible with the dates. We were offered 9/11/10 as an option to save money but weren't into the idea. However, we booked 6/20/10 - Father's Day - for the same exact discount as the 9/11 one. You might want to look into that date.

Re: A September 11th wedding??
Thank you for all of your insight everyone. It is nice to be able look at it in all different ways. I understand ppls concern with the day and the sadness that it brings to some, but I also agree that it is an ooportunity to change the meaning of the day. I am still not sure but I will let you know what we decide to do. Thank you for the suggestions as well! :)
