My lips were feeling a little chapped, so I say to myself, 'Self, why don't you get that little pink pot of lip balm from your purse and slather some on.' I retrieve the pot of much-needed lip balm, open it and prepare to load my right ring finger with sweet relief, when my mind comes to a screeching halt.
I got a papercut on the tip my right ring finger this morning and had to put a band-aid on it. I can't use it for my pot of lip balm!! It actually crossed my mind to just put it away and not bother! Then I almost couldn't figure out how to apply it without the use of that digit. And I'm such a spaz, I almost couldn't make my right index finger function with enough dexterity to slop some balm on my parched lips!!
It was such a bizarre and zen moment. Like trying to do things with your left hand if you're right-handed.

what is strange about this moment is that you typically use your ring finger for such purpose, whereas I cannot imagine doing so! I always use my index finger to apply lip balm and those sorts of things.. I dare say I couldn't use my ring finger if I tried

That's what was so strange! I never realized it, but the sole purpose of my right ring finger is for the application of lip balms/glosses! I was at a loss without it!!

you know, know that you mention it, I can't figure out which finger I use for lip balm. I feel the need to talke the lip balm out now & try, but I think I will be trying to hard. I wil have to catch myself off guard later.
I think it might be my middle finger.

i use my pinkie finger on my right hand, as far as i'm concerned, the pinkie finger serves no other useful function.

I'm with Felicia...I couldn't imagine using my ring finger to apply lip balm. As a matter of fact, i just pretended to do it (don't have lip balm on me), and it felt really awkward! I always use my right index finger. Liz, I'm glad you finally managed to get your lips moisturized!

I have to use my right ring finger because I hold the little pot in my left hand and the top of the pot in my right hand between my thumb, index and middle fingers. My pinky always sticks out like I'm honor-bound to Dickensian ettiquette.
And if I don't use my right ring finger, I end up contorting my face into an awful cross between a grimace and a pucker.
I'vs got issues with the use of my pinkies too!
These tiny little rituals and habits of ours are hilarious!!!!

And I cannot even imagine the issues with your pinkies, but I find that my pinkies have little use other than to type with

the thing with my pinkies is this... When I eat a large sandwhich or burger or anything that comes between two pieces of bread I always prop the end of it up with my pinkies! I've got the burger in both hands...the thumbs underneath, the index, middle and ring fingers on top and the pinkies underneath, supporting the end!
My sisters tease me about it mercilessly!

First... about mimicking my hand gestures!!! Second... that's exactly what my sisters say! I can't explain it....it just is! It also prevents things from sliding out the other side!
