? about chosing BM dresses & vent

Are the majority of you chosing a BM dress on your own and then showing your BM's and telling them to order it, or are you going shopping w/them and letting them select it. Almost every dress that I email to my cousin, who's a BM, she keep saying, 'Oh I don't know if I like that until I try it on, or 'no thats not for me'. Keep in mind she's a size 4, so I would say almost everything looks good on you when you are that thin. The majority of weddings that I was in, I hated the dress, but I didn't say anything. I was wearing it for 10 hours! I shouldn't be having this much stress, I only have 2 BM's and 1 MOH.

I did not necessarily choose their dress for them and either did they. It was a mutual agreement. A few of my bridesmaids came with me when I was trying on dresses for myself and at the same time, one of my bm's was modeling different dresses for them. In the end, we all ended up liking the same dress and that is how the dress was picked for them.

First of all, it's your wedding, so really she should have know say.

That being said, I only had 3 girls in my BP, but I took them with me to pick out dresses. What I did was pick a designer and a color and let them pick what style they wanted. This way you can get a cut that flatters each figure.

Here's a pic.

I only went with 1 MOH and had some input from the salesgirl at Macy's Bridal that the dress we chose was flattering to all body types. But I put my foot down when I heard girls complaining that it was or wasn't going to be strapless. We decided the MOH would have strapless and the rest of the girls would have straps, so she would be set apart from them as my MOH. Heard some crap for that... but just said, 'sorry... that's the way we're doing it.' I wasn't mean... I just let them know that this was it.

Don't let too many cooks in the kitchen and don't ask too many people what they think... because they'll tell you!!!

Why don't you pick a color and let them pick a dress that's flattering to them? I think that would look fine especially since you are doing burgandy. I picked the dress and showed the girls and they said OK. But I knew they would bc of the style. I only have 2, as you already know, and I knew that they didn't have arm issues and also the gathering at the waist is slimming. They liked it. I tried to let them pick it themselves but they both have really different tastes. So it worked out at the end.

I did exaclty what you did. I emailed my 3 BM pics of dress that I liked b/c I didn't want anyone to feel uncomfortable & one BM kept finding fault with every dress & then would send me a dress suggestion back. After a month of this, I became really annoyed & emailed my 3 BM pics of 6 dresses from the same designer, each the same fabrics but different stying & told them that this was the group of dresses that we are choosing from. We are actually going this weekend to try on so we'll see...
good luck

I changed the color to skyblue.

I chose like 7 dresses from a particular designer and then e-mailed all of my girls. I asked them if they wanted me to come with them when they were going to try them on & they said yes. I did end up going with them 3 different times because everyone has a different schedule, but in the end everyone was happy with what they chose. They got to try different ones at the store and selected the one they thought they looked best in.

Don't fret this one. Select ones you like and then give them an end date by which you want to place the order by.

unless you offer to pay for all your BM's dresses - they should have a say. as a former BM - to pay all that $$ in a dress - i wanted to look good!

you guys should comprimise and find a style you both can agree on.

I chose the color and asked it to be strapless...they got to choose the dress. Lucky for me most of my BMs had the same taste in dresses and were all similiar sizes!!!!! It is your wedding!!! Do what you want because it is you that is paying for the pictures and will have to look at them for the rest of your life!!!

I have 10 girls who range from size 0 to size 18. Three of them live in Canada, three others live in other states and the other 4 live in my area.

I was having the hardest time so I picked a couple of dresses, made sure they were available in the stores near all of them, let them see what they liked best.

I'm taking the girls who live around me to try the dresses on next weekend.

I think it was a great way to get everyone involved. And it seems to be working so far

AllJoy,
I feel you on this one!!! I am having the same problem, that's why I logged on today! I have five BM's and One MOH all different sizes. I picked one dress that I loved and then someone complained now three weeks later my email is full of dresses they've seen, they tried on or they just plain want. I told them just keep it in the colors and pick their own dress, but for once they were all in agreement that they should wear the same things. I want to pull my hair out.
Hope yours goes better then mine is.

I went with my MOH and chose a dress with her then took all my girls...if anyone had a major issue they could've said something. But it worked on everyone except one who was pregnant (she won't be for my wedding)
It looks great on all of them fortunately!

Re: ? about chosing BM dresses & vent

Basically, I lost a bridesmaid because of this exact problem. She was driving me crazy.

I feel I did a stupid thing by opening it up to everyone - what they wanted to wear. The complaints and comments just kept coming. So I decided to lay down the rules and told everyone that we have 10 more months of planning...I didn't want to hear the complaints and comments from now to the day of the wedding. I shouldn't be driving myself crazy for such a inconsequential part of the wedding. In my opinion, a bridesmaid dress is a bridesmaid dress. I have never seen a bridesmaid look so awesome/stunning in a dress - bridesmaids usually look decent/good. It is not your prom dress and not your prom. Also, when you buy the cheaper ones ($100 - $150), realistically speaking, what do you really expect - to look like a runway model?

I just couldn't take it anymore. I know I may sound like a complete jerk.

So, if anyone had a problem with this, they always have the option of coming as a guest. Wear whatever you want on whatever budget you want.

(only 2 out of the 5 girls were giving me headache after headache., 1 of which dropped out. This probably saved the friendship in the longrun).

So, I guess it depends on your wedding party and their personalities on how you handle it. I knew the personalities of the bridesmaids and I did something stupid. Live and learn.

I went with the my sisters and showed them the dresses I liked and then let them pick out the one they liked the best but it worked out b/c we both liked the same dress. It is your wedding so you have the right to pick whatever dress you want.
