okay so i figured it out...you get an email when someone replies to the post...if you click subscribe. at the bottom of the email there is a link to unsubscribe from the topic.

Yes that's what it is...it comes in handy for instance if you started a thread that you need to constantly update when people respond. That will send you an email to your email address whenever someone replies to your thread like a reminder.
I did that on my 'official VYC' thread so I can always check out what people are posting on there!
