Acrylics vs. Natural Nails

Acrylics vs. Natural Nails

OK, So after 10 some odd years I am finally ready to get rid of my acrylic nails. Reason being - 1 I don't like really long or really thick nails anymore, and 2 They are getting astronomically expensive to keep up with, besides I don't have that kind of time with a full time job, school and a 11month old son! I like the look of natural nails with a nice french manicure better anyway! My problem is this, because I have had them on for so long my nails underneath are paper thin and I don't think they will grow properly - not to mention they may cut both me and my son, So what do I do? I thought about possibly getting that new UV gel over them so that they don't break, has anyone ever done this? I have tried to find nail salons that do this but so far I have not found any, especially on the eastern end of Long Island where I live. Any Ideas?

When I made the decision to go natural - I bought the Nail tek for my nails - it really made a difference and they have one for when you first take off the artificial nails, it made my nails stronger - but the thing is you have to consistently do it. I think you apply a coat every day.

After I took off my silk wraps, I bought a Sally Hansen nail growth miracle or something and a nail strenghthener. They are a lot stronger now.

In the beginning, though, I kept them short. It was the easiest. I cut them and filed them smooth, pushed the cuticles back and put on the nail strenghtener. They looked clean and decent.

I took my acrylic nails off in March 2004 and they are STILL not healthy . I will never get acrylic again. When I took them off my real nails were so brittle they were like paper. I went to CVS and bought a kit that was specifically for when you take the acrylics off - it was 3 steps - a protectant, a strengthener and a gloss or something like that. It worked very well but they are still not the same

Get one of those Sally Hansen or Nail Tek products and - most importantly - start taking a multivitamin.

the summer is coming-your nails grow really fast. I would soak off the acrylics and cut the nails down and use Nailtiques. That's what I did..it takes some getting used to but it's so good to let your nails breath for a while.-and you'll save a sh!tload of $$ in the long run.

I've heard good things about nailtiques.

and thanks for this thread. i've been wanting to get tips, but now I really think I shouldn't, my nails are really strong and pretty long on thier own...I shouldn't mess it up!

When I took my nails off - Aug 03 - my nails were also paper thin... They still are They are constantly peeling and cracking up the middle.

I'm going to attempt to go and get manicures done and see if that improves.. if not, I'm getting them put back on for the wedding so at least my hands look nice.

I took my nails off after many years and it took a few months to get them back to normal but they DO get back to normal. I would simply get regular manicures and use strengthening stuff. I would also take vitamins. That might help. I am going to put them back on for the wedding next year so my hands look nice in the pictures. Then they come off. The maintenance is a pain in the patootie.

I was one to wear tips all the time..on and off. I was never fond of acrylic since it was always the hardest to come off and did the worst damage. I took them off about 6months ago (maybe more) to sacrifice some savings for my wedding.
I just went for a manicure and they said my nails are in good shape. I used Nail Envy, Sally Hansen-Be strong. It took some time but I was impressed how good they look.
I would not go back to fake nails...except wrapping them for my wedding, if needed.

Definitely take them off and use the products that will help. All seem good to use. I know it will be upsetting to see ur nails short and not in the best shape...you may want to run out and get tips again... I almost did. In the long run, Im happy to get manicures and healthy, natural nails
