addressing envelopes

what is the proper way to address 2 people, lets say engaged.

is it:

Ms. Jane Doe and John Smith
or

Ms. Jane Doe and Mr. John Smith
or

Ms. Jane Doe
Mr. John Smith

My calligrapher said that it depended on the number of characters in each line. If the names are short, then they go together, centered on the first line, If the names are longer, then each name goes on its own line with no AND in between.

FM if you need someone ... the woman who did mine was reasonable, and excellent!
