Addressing Invites

Addressing Invites

I am helping a friend address her invites tonight and was wondering are the addresses centered, or are the names centered and everything else lined up under that?
Also, I know you spell out Street and Apt etc, but do you spell out the state or just use the abbreviation:
New York, NY
or New York, New York

Re: Addressing Invites

I actually just handed my list into my calligrapher and I was having a whole bunch of issues - so i pulled out my mom's etiquette book and some old invites I had received...

1. Everything is not centered. It is lined up under the names.
2. Everything gets spelled out, except Mr., Mrs., Ms., etc. Even the state. So you would write New York, New York.

Hope this helps.

Actually, hand callligraphy is always lined up, but lasered calligraphy is centered. If you're using a computer, then you center each line ....

Two more tips:
For lines using AND (two individual people's names) ... any lines that are too long, you should separate.

For numbered houses: spell out numbers up to ninety-nine, after that, then use the symbols.

the woman who did mine was a huge etiquite stickler & we had several discussions about this!

Good luck ... you're quite a friend to help out like this!!

Thanks, hopefully she doesn't have too many envelopes!

Is it proper to send an invite to two people who aren't married but lived together? Should I just put my friend's name on the outer envelope and both names on the inner?

I also heard that it's not proper etiquette to send an invitation that says 'and Family'. Do you just right the husband and wife's name on the outter, and everyone's names on the inner?

Buttafli, I am not following any etiquitte books so i may be wrong with this but what I am doing is if it is a family I am just writing mr. and mrs. john doe and then on the inner envelope writing out names.

Oh, I am also just writing my friends name and then on the inner envelope writing both of their names in the case of them living together. If I am very close to both of them I will put of their names on the outer envelope.

If to people are living together, yes, yu put both of their names on outer and inner, but on separate lines. The woman's name goes first (although I've also heard alphabetically - but I think this is more for same sex.)

Also, you do not write 'and Family' On the outer you would put:
'Mr. and Mrs. John Doe'
and on the inner:
'Mr. and Mrs. Doe
John and Jane'

I believe that the children are listed in age order, but I'm not sure.
