Obviously the name & address goes on the outer envelope of the invitation, but on the inner one do you put 'Mr. & Mrs. J. Smith' or 'John and Mary'??? Thanks....

Yes, it's pretty much up to you whether you want to be formal or not. We were formal on the outer envelope and informal on the inners.

Yup, it's up to you. We were formal on both and did the inners as above, except if there were kids then we did a separate line with their first names...ex:
Mr. and Mrs. Jones Cassandra and Malachy

Re: addressing the inner envelope
Thanks ladies - and one more question...when addressing the outer envelope to a family of 4 (immediate family) do you put 'Mr. & Mrs. J. Smith & family or Mr. & Mrs. J. Smith Susan & James

Re: addressing the inner envelope
According to all of the articles I have read if you have both an inner and outer envelope then on the outer you would write Mr. and Mrs. Smith and on the inner you would address everyone. Apparently you should not write '...and family' on the outer.

that's right as far as i know... the outer envelope should be addressed to the adults only: Mr. and Mrs. John Smith.
then the inner envelope would read: mr. and mrs. smith ann, jane, and john

Re: addressing the inner envelope
It is your decision, but alot of people are more casual with the inner envelope.

that went all out the window for me! i didn't want to deal with who to invite (because I had large families with children who are engaged) and i still wrote and family so they could decide who is coming or not. i did not want to make that decision
on the outisde we puts mr. and mrs. john smith and int he inner it was mr. and mrs. smith
