Does anyone find this offensive to put on an invitation? For those of you with children, would this bother you? I dont want to offend anyone but I do not want children at my wedding, its a personal preference. However, i have alot of OOT's coming that feel as though its ok just to bring the kids. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Adults only?
Same thing...My reception card reads as follows:
Adult Receiption Seven O'Clock in the evening Hamlet Willow Creek One Clubhouse Drive Mount Sinai, NY
I wouldnt put adults only, just adult reception. I just dont have the room for children and most of the ppl have children.
think of it as a night for the parents to have some fun!

Well, when you address the invite as 'Mr. and Mrs. BlahBlah' then it's pretty much implied. I wouldn't write Adults Only, but that's just me. If they call to ask you (which they prob will bc some people have no common sense), then I would let them know that it's adults only.

I absolutely agree that it 'should be' common sense but i already had someone in FH's family and on my side of the family assume that there toddlers were coming with them to the wedding- i heard this through other relatives.

thats why i felt the need to put adult reception....ive seen it happen to both my friends who got married.....IMO you arent offending anyone...but thats me. i saw this format in my invite book as a sample...so iwasnt afraid to use it
it doesnt mean that u hate kids...maybe u dont have the room....maybe u are over budget....maybe u are 25 ppl over max (lol me!) U dont owe an explanation, im just saying...theres a plethera of reasons y one would have adult reception

I absolutely don't think writing 'Adults Only' would offend anyone. If you already know that people are planning on bringing their children, then I'd agree that you'd have to write it on the invite.

Re: Adults only?
It's not proper ettiquette and people are 'supposed to' know that Mr. & Mrs. ______ only includes the parents, but many people either don't know or don't care.
I still think it's better not to put 'adults only' and to spread the news by word of mouth, but in the end if it will save you a lot of work it's not awful to write it.
EDIT: If you're willing to provide a babysitter or two for your OOT guests you can include a card with info about that in the envelopes of people with kids.
Not sure how I'd word that but 'we have arranged for experienced babysitters to care for your children at the hotel' and maybe have RSVP boxes for that too? Just an idea

Re: Adults only?
I hate to say this..but it doesn't matter what you write! If people want to bring their kids, they will and some of them don't care if it says adults only, adult reception or is addressed to Mr & Mrs.
People can be pretty rude, but its true!!

Re: Adults only?
My FH and I also do not want to have children at our ceremony or reception and also have a lot of OOT guests. We sent an e-mail to our guests asking them to save the date and mentioned that it is an adult only ceremony and reception. I don't remember the exact wording but can look it up for you, if you want.
As one of my family members pointed out - you are asking people not to bring children to your wedding, you never said not to bring them to NY. We offered to find them a babysitter (family friend, close neighbor, etc.), if they wanted, and suggested that they bring a babysitter with them if they don't want a 'stranger' watching their children.

Re: Adults only?
People are supposed to get who is invited by who is stated on the inner envelope (or outer, if not using inner envelopes). Don't put 'adult reception' on there. It's becoming more common but it's still not SOP.
Quite honestly, people who feel that their kids should invited (unjustifiably, so long as you consistently apply the 'no kids' rule) are going to be irked whether you put adult reception on or not. 'Why did you say 'adult reception?' Why isn't little Joey invited?' It results in awkward conversations either way. Plus, the original way implies inclusion (stating who is invited) rather than exclusion (who is not invited), which is less polite.

Re: Adults only?
I must admit I feel funny excluding the kids because everyone is coming from so far. I am offering babysitting if they're interested, though, and crossing fingers that they take advantage!

Re: Adults only?
I just have to add my 2 cents. I find this entire topic so awkward. I honestly don't want any kids at the ceremony/reception other than the kids that are in our bridal party - but that sounds so stupid. Like 'my cousin's 3 year olds are invited because they're the flower girls, but your kids aren't.' EEEK!

Seriously what is wrong with PEOPLE!
I asked my wedding planner when this issue came up for our wedding she explained to me that I really should not be writing on the invite adults only or anything that implied this.
Apparently it is tacky. It is also tacky if guests do not understand when it says Mr and Mrs and not family!!!
She told me to simply get the word out and address it to those that might be an issue that there are no children invited and that there is no babysitter hired. We did just this - everything worked out , but I know some of his family was annoyed since there are 16 nieces and nephews. OH WELL!
