Adventures in Cooking

Adventures in Cooking

Sooo tonight I wanted to have a sweet potato with my dinner. I asked my Mom how to cook it, and she said to put the oven on 350 degrees and put it in for an hour. I told her I was starving, so she said I could do it in the microwave for 20 min, just to punch some holes in it with a fork. So I did that, stuck it in the microwave and went about making the rest of my dinner.

About 12 minutes in, FH exclaims 'What the heck are you doing in there?!?!' Well, I was facing the stove so I had no idea what he was talking about...so I turn around and I realize the kitchen is FULL of smoke!!! And its coming from the microwave!!! I shut the microwave off and open all the windows...then I open the microwave and a huge cloud of smoke comes billowing out!!!

FH took the sweet potato out and cracked it open...it was charred BLACK inside. What my mom didn't know and what I neglected to remember is that our microwave is beastly strong, so most times need to be really cut down for it to remain the same.

Soo...now it smells like a campfire in my apt

Yikes!!! Glad everything turned out ok!

I usually boil sweet potatoes by peeling them then cutting them into little pieces and make mashed sweet potatoes. I add butter and brown sugar to them when I mash them and they're delicious.

You can also make really good sweet potato latkes (pancakes) pretty easily if you have a grater or a food processor.

Maybe this is why I got voted '09 Betty Crocker...

Yeah, the boiling and mashing is my move in the future...I am traumatized by my coal-black potato from tonight

LMAO, my best friend did this the first week in our apartment with a regular tater.. she always makes her baked potatoes in the microwave, but she wasn't used to mine which is a long stronger than her old roommates... the potato was literally ON FIRE and she set off the smoke alarms.. the apartment and the micrwave smelled for days and we had this... horrible...tar like substance all over our hands... LMAO, great memory now though, so funny.

Sweet potato in the microwave (if it's strong) is like 5 or 6 minutes.

You can also slice it like a potato chip and pan fry it with some oil, it takes some time, but at least you're watching it while it's cooking. Maybe like a half hour or more, depending on how much potato you put in.

You can also deep fry and make potato chips, this takes only a few minutes....saw Giada do this and it looked yummy!

You can also slice into pieces and roast in a pan with some cinnamon, this takes about 45 minutes.
