Advice and Suggestions Needed

Hey Ladies!

I'm a first time poster but long time troller on the boards. I just want to say that I've gotten so much great information and ideas from you! You are an incredibly creative, passionate bunch!

So, now for my dilemma...lol. I've been with my FH for about 6 years now. He FINALLY proposed in January. He's the love of my life, my soul-mate, and my best friend. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with him. From the beginning, I wanted a small destination wedding with just close family and friends who would be able to attend. However, my mom was pushing for a big to-do. Long story short, I ended up booking at a RH who's min. is 120. We put the guest list together and we were on our way. My mom is paying for half but has no clue what things actually cost. When I told her that we were going to end up around $25k total, she balked, which is so incredibly frustrating because she was the one who was pushing for this big wedding the entire time. I haven't been happy since and I have been completely overwhelmed by the entire process. When we really sat down and looked at the guest list, we saw that we were inviting people whom we've lost contact with or aren't very close to at all. My aunts/uncles/cousins (who make up 70 of my guest list) have a myriad of different complaints about one thing or another. I don't need or want them there at this point.

After many tears over the weekend, FH and I decided that we should just do the destination wedding and let my mom plan a small, intimate dinner as a reception when we get back. It's more us and our style. I approached her with the idea last night and was SHOCKED to find that she was actually down for the idea. All of this for nothing...lol.

So now for the questions! First off, would we be able to get our deposit back from the RH that we booked with? The wedding date was set for May of next year. How does that work?

Any suggestions for a small dinner, approx. 50-75 people? Looking for something romantic and simple. Perhaps something with a private room, beer & wine, and a nice meal.

And lastly, the destination! We're looking to do this in March. About 12 people, including me and FH. We're thinking something in the Caribbean.

Thank you in advance for all your help and ideas. I sincerely appreciate it.

Wow! Congratulations on your engagement!!!

I'm so happy for you!

If your hall is in Suffolk County you can get the depost back minus $100 dollars. If it's in Nassau or NYC they can legally keep your deposit, but many places WILL give you back the deposit if they rebook the date, and with this much time, the likelyhood is good that they will rebook.

Does the hall have a smaller room? Is it possible that they will put your deposit toward the small intimate dinner your mom wants to plan?

MY friend is doing a wedding for 30 people, basically renting out an entire small resort in Jamaica.

If it's all couples, you could do it at a Sandals and the wedding itself is free. You could do the same at a Beaches resort if it's not all couples.

Good Luck!

Congratulations! It's so exciting that you guys will actually get to have the wedding you dreamed of.

As far as your deposit goes, check your contract with the hall - it should say. But even if they don't specify, you should push to try and get it back as long as they can rebook the date.

A friend of mine is getting married and having a small dinner reception at La Marmite Restaurant in East Williston. The wedding isn't for a few more weeks, but I have heard amazing things about the restaurant! Worth checking out.

Best wishes!!

not sure about the deposite since alot of places seem to have different rules on it. iheard some places wait til the date is rebooked then they give you, your money back. but worth a shot to ask if you can put the money towards the party when you get back from the DW.

glad to hear you stuck with what you and your FH wanted

Congratulations on deciding to go with your heart and do what makes you and your FH happy! My FBIL got married in the Keys and it was beautiful. I can't remember the name of the resort, but fm me if you want me to find out. Good luck!

My sister did something similar.. Just only 2 people went with them to be their witnesses ( not even my family or my father to give her away). They came back & a month later had their reception at The watermill in their smallest room available to fit around 60people? Not 100% on total but it was around there. Glad you went with your gut for what YOU wanted. As for a deposit I agree with the girls above that MOST give back the deposit, you have plenty of time that they can let the day go back out for grabs.

Firstly, Congratulations and glad to hear that you and FH are able to do what is going to make you happy.

I agree w/ the above poster regarding your deposit refund, will depend on location and on the hall itself. Def. check if they will accomodate your small dinner perhaps.

I originally wanted to have a destination wedding as well, but when we worked the numbers it was going to cost almost the same, so we decided against it. But if I were able to, I wanted to have it at the El Convento in San Juan, PR. I am obsessed with this place! There is also a gorgeous church right across the street.

Happy Planning!
