Advice for a bride who knows nothing about flowers?

Hi everyone! I need some help, I'm making a few florist appts for next week and I know nothing about flowers or cost.

I'm working on a brooch bouquet for myself, so I'll only need the following. 1 giveaway bouquet, 3 bridesmaids bouquets, 5 corsages, 9 boutonnieres. We're on a tight budget, so we're not doing floral centerpieces or ceremony decorations-- just wedding party flowers.

So I need some advice on what flowers will keep the cost down. I'm looking for white flowers, I happen to love white peonies, but I'm not sure how much they cost. Any advice? Things I should ask at the appt.?

Thanks!

Your best bet is just ask each florist. I know some of the florists I went to had books of all different flower types. I would show them what I liked and as my luck has it, most of what I liked wasn't in season for my wedding. But after showing them what I liked they got a good idea of my style and they showed me pictures of things that are in season. I know it's not much of an answer but I hope it helps. I really just put my trust in their profession.

Good Luck.

Peopnies are expensive and I don't even think in season if your wedding is in August. if you like white centerpieces have you thought of just doing baby's breath? It can be so ethereal and elegant if that's a look that interests you.

ask the florist what flowers would be in season at your time...give them an overall budget and have them work that way

peonies are expensive and are only in season for about 2 months. your florist will walk you through all of it!

I did not want to spend a lot on flowers BC while they are pretty, I know I cannot remember anyone's flowers from previous weddings I've been too. I scouted out several big name vendors on here who all gave me ridiculous prices (even when telling I wanted to create my own candle centerpieces with materials bought over the internet. I had the best luck at my local florist. She has wedding experience and gave me the best possible price. She also didn't try charging $65/centerpiece, even with me purchasing the materials!! She is only providing the orchid and setting up for me. Hth!

honestly we didnt think we were going to do centerpieces either. but we figured making them ourselves would be a certain price... and then visited a florist just to see. Hidden essence gave us such a great price on personal and centerpiece flowers that we booked both! for a few hundred extra dollars (vs. what we could make them ourselves for) we figured it is totally worth it for THEM to set up the centerpieces, especially because we don't plan on having a DOC.

peonies are expensive and only in season around may...however check out pictures of garden roses, they look very similar...in terms of keeping cost down, you could do something as simple as a single long stemmed calla lilly per girl instead of a bouquet...you should also look into using bigger fuller flowers like garden roses, lillies, hydrangea that are space occupying and look full with very few needing to be used...you can also fill space with greenery and babies breath

we are doing all hydrangea. but you have to be careful to keep them hydrated!

I hate to tell you this but peonies are not in season in August (to the best of my knowledge). I've always wanted peonies but I'm getting married July 5th and both florists I met with, including my mother who was a horticulture major in college, told me that I miss peonies by about 2 weeks. They are in season from about May thru June, and this past year it was less I believe because we didn't have much of a winter. I am very sorry if this upsets you (as much as it upset me) but my florist showed me a bunch of other options to achieve my full centerpieces and bouquets. I made it even more difficult because I DO NOT want roses, but there are options other than the classic rose that don't actually look like roses. My biggest piece of advice if find a florist who's been in business a long time, knows what they are doing and what they are talking about. If you know someone who knows fowers or at lease has planned a wedding before, I'd suggest you take them with you so you don't feel completely overwhelmed. Also my florist only does weddings and doesn't charge for the type of flower, rather charges for the size and style of the arranement (tall, short, full, sparse, etc.)

I recommend B U rtons and Hidden Essence if you're looking for inexpensive flowers. They were very reasonable in prices. If you love peonies, look for other flowers in the rose family. We're using purple lisianthus, but they are gorgeous in white too!

Peonies are sadly very expensive! I went with spider mums and they were very large - we bought them wholesale and made all of our bouquets/centerpieces ourselves. For 140 flowers we spent about $170. If you or your bridesmaids are a little creative and you just want simple bouquets with one type of flower, I suggest buying them wholesale and making the bouquets with your bridal party! Otherwise, the florist is probably going to charge you $50-$100/bouquet .
