I'd tell her in person. If she asks why you didn't tell her sooner just say I wanted to be able to show you my ring since pictures wouldn't do it justice!!!

aww tough situation!!
maybe you can tell her that you wanted to surprise her in person and if she says you should have called, say it was bad timing and you felt bad for what she was going through. its all the truth, hope everything works out for you!
