I have been in a funk or sorts lately. My FH and I moved up to Greenwich a couple of weeks ago. We both work in Stamford so it’s a much easier commute for us now to work. However, I have been pretty lonely up here because none of our family and friends live close to us and my FH is the type to want to have his alone time and I am the complete opposite. So I have been spending lots of time alone lately. Also, I have been literally begging him for a dog, both because I LOVE dogs and I have wanted one forever, and because I have been so lonely. I grew up with a dog so I really miss having one. FH doesn't want the responsibility of a dog right now because we both work full time. I work 830-530, live less than a 10 minute drive from work and can go home during lunch time to spend time with a dog and can work from home sometimes too. I have been extremely upset over this to the point where I haven't been sleeping well at night. FH and I have been fighting a lot about it lately because he doesn't want to hear about the dog anymore. But he tells me to just get a dog if it is making me this upset and he will just deal with it. FH loves dogs (probably more than me) but I think he is just really afriad right now to committ to a dog who will be around for 15 years or more. I really don't know what to do.
I really need your honest opinions about what you would do. You probably all think I am crazy.

I think you should get a doggy if it will make you feel better. Once he/she is in the house FH will go bananas over him/her…Good luck!!

First of all, FH and I both work full time and we have not one, but TWO dogs. They are fine together during the day since we have a big enough house with space to roam around and they keep each other entertained. If he's afraid of the work from training it, you can always adopt an older dog. Personally, I'm a dog person to the extreme- only once in my life did I not have a dog and that was because my apartment wouldn't allow one (and I tried to sneak one anyway and got caught!) I say go get a dog- it's your house, too!! As long as you take responsibility for it, he shouldn't have any complaints.

Get the doggie. I can understand the fear of working full time and having to train it. Perhaps get a older dog who is already trained and socialized.
Then you can take the dog to dog parks and walks and make friends!

I think you should definitely get the dog. Feeling lonely can definitely start affecting you in many ways, in your relationship, your health, at work. A dog is a great companion.

Re: Advice Needed NWR
i definitely think that it is doable to have a dog and you both work full-time. Its esp great that you work so close and can stop by during lunch if you need to. FH and I have our puppy and we both work full-time and it works out fine. I mean i do feel guilty leaving her but shes fine...she just sleeps and stuff most of the day anyway.
I will say though, just keep in mind that having a dog is a lot more of a committment than just being home to feed/walk it. It def changes your ability to go out or travel bc you always have to think about who can watch the dog. just something to keep in mind...fh and i have had to make a lot of adjustments now that we have our puppy.
with all this said, i think you should def get a dog if it will make you happy. I am sure once you get it, FH will fall in love with it and be so happy you got it!

Re: Advice Needed NWR
get a cute dog that everyone falls in love with. you will feel better and no one can complain cuz the doggy will be sooooo cute!
just make sure you are up early to take the pup for walks or training.
as for moving to a place where you dont know alot of ppl -- are you friendly with your co-workers? maybe join a local gym or activity? if you need suggestions on things to do/join, i can mention a bunch.
(after college i moved upstate for a job and i knew no one!)

Re: Advice Needed NWR
I think you need to really evaluate the situation.
I do not think a dog is the perfect solution; perhaps it will offer companionship, but it is no substitute for going out there and making new friends.
Part of moving to a new place is going with the understanding that you're going to need to meet new people--be willing to put yourself out there.
Getting a dog may only be a temporary repreive from the feelings your having now. And it seems your insistence on a dog is putting stress on your relationship, which is never a good idea. You said you only moved a few weeks ago, I think its probably a good idea to become a little more settled before taking on the responsibilty of a dog, but also so you can give yourself some time to adjust and meet new people.
Good luck

while Heather really has the best advice, i honestly would go out and adopt a dog. I'm all for saving animals so i'm looking at it from another prospective but at the same time, you need the companionship!
perfect solution: get the dog and go to a doggy park or something to that extent and then you'll meet other doggy people!
i'm 96.7% positive that if you brought a dog home, FH will warm up in no time.

I am all for dogs… if you have the time.. As far as having a puppy its pretty much like a baby, it can’t be alone for long periods of time and needs constant tlc… Its really a lot of work, just make sure ur up to it!

Get the dog! I'm not a dog type person...I have 7 cats HOWEVER animals are such good company. In time they become better company than most people I know. GO FOR IT! If you really want to feel good, don't pay for a dog. Get a pound hound. Save a dog/puppy from a shelter. Do it today....you'll feel great tomarrow!

Re: Advice Needed NWR
I am sooo not a dog person! I've NEVER liked dogs EVER. FH has always had dogs growing up! He kept mentioning to me that he wanted a dog and I always said NO!!!! Then he would e-mail me pics of Teacup Yorkies and if we passed a petshop he would stop in and we would see the puppies. So I finally gave in and said YES only if it's a teacup yorkie and if he is the one to do ALL the cleaning up!
We got a Teacup Yorkie in May, he was 6 weeks old... I am so IN LOVE with him and I take more care of him than FH does!!!
So get the dog! He will deal with it!

I definitely think you should get the dog! It sounds like you are up for the responsibility! FH will love the dog...sounds like he's just afraid of the commitment but I'm sure it'll be fine once you get it and he realizes that part of it is not so bad. It's a huge commitment but it's not as big of a commitment as a child. I think it's good practice!

Re: Advice Needed NWR
hey, this might sound strange but I actually got a puppy last year for a kind of similar reason (bored/lonely, had free time and wanted the company and have always been a dog lover), and to be honest, it had the reverse effect of what I was expecting. By getting a puppy, I felt like I had to be home even more than I was in the first place, just to get it trained etc (I live in the city and we had to bring the puppy out a LOT to get it in the habit of going to the bathroom outside). so, I don't think the fact that you work is a real issue, but just consider you could end up feeling even more isolated if you have to run home after work to care for a dog, instead of maybe meeting up with some new friends, etc.

Re: Advice Needed NWR
i can understand where you are coming from. My FH and I just got a dog in February because both of us have never had one and we both had always really wanted one!! And I would not ever in a million years get rid of Colbie now, but we have NO life anymore since we've gotten her! So for this reason, i can understand your FH not wanting one! Our life now revolves around our puppy - it's just gotten a lot more complicated since then! So, obviously you have to do what you think is best, and i love that we have our puppy, but i'm just being honest with you as to why i can see where he is coming from! Good luck with it though!

Get the dog, it will cheer you up and you will have someone to take care of. I work in the city and live on LI and my dog is home all day by himself with the cats and is fine. We adopted a 2yr year dog last year from the North Shore Animal League because we didn't want the responsibilty of a puppy.

I am actually borrowing my dad's dog tomorrow night. My dad won't leave him with me for more than a night because the dog is getting old and doesn't like to be in new places for very long.

we didnt want one either because of the same reason (everyone works, not enough space, etc.), but my sister just went out and bought one, and even though my mom was a little pissed at first, everyone is obsessed with my dog, especially my mmom she treats him like her son, no one can imagine now being with out him
im sure once youget it your fh will be head over heels for it
