Re: Advice on how to quit smoking..
I myself have never smoked but I do know people who do and have quit. Some do it the first time, some takes a couple tries. What seems to work the best for them was the gum. It is that instant gratification thing of doing something with your mouth. They also had alot of lollipops, chewed on their pens, and chewed regular gum too.

I am a social smoker...which is even worst than a true smoker because I do it under peer pressure...not literally but I rarely smoke alone. I have no advice but Good for you!!!! Try it all...until something works!!!

Re: Advice on how to quit smoking..
i tried the patch and it worked soooo well!!! I didn't feel the side effects of quitting smoking. I still craved one every once in awhile, but the physical (and some mental) withdrawal effects weren't there. Once i put the patch on i never had another cigarette.
I started drinking A LOT of coffee after awhile, but i think that was just to have something to do instead of smoke.

FI and i both smoke as well...but honestly I don't think I can or want to quit before the wedding...I think it would be hard enough to do on its own, rather than planning your wedding along with it..Make sense? It does to me

Try the patch. I used it & it worked really well. ( I did start again b/c I went through a really bad patch) Much better than cold turkey

I tried a few times, all of them cold turkey... I finally really quit, I think... I find that the only way you can really quit is honestly wanting to and making a concious effort to do so... Good luck, it's not easy... but honestly, after one week of not smoking, you will find that the smell makes you sick!

Re: Advice on how to quit smoking..
I quit about three months ago cold turkey. For me I just decided that it was time to stop. So, I stopped. Several of my friends have used the patch and gum with great results.
My advice is that people I know quit and think that they can still smoke socially. For me it had to be an all or nothing deal. Either I am a smoker or I am a non-smoker. I decided that I am a non-smoker and I am living my life(healthier and more energetic) that way.
Good Luck!!!

Re: Advice on how to quit smoking..
I heard it is easier for men to quit then women. I really want to b4 the wedding. My mom and I both have tried the patch a couple of times but it never really worked. The only thing ive tried that really worked was Wellbutrin (sp?) Its that antidepressant they advertised a few years ago as a stop smoking pill. You have to get it from MD. I totally quit, didnt even think about it - but it made me crazy (really emotional & moody). As soon as I stopped taking it I started smoking again. I think Cold Turkey is the best, but like someone said earlier you have to be READY and it might take a few times.

I completely agree. You can do it cold turkey if you are really ready to. I did it once, for 5 months. I started a new job and started smoking again. That was 8 years ago. People bug me to quit but, I am not ready to yet. As long as it is something you want to do and are ready to do, you will. Good luck!! And, good for you!!

fw quit cold turkey 6 yrs ago..(right after we meet)
she cheated and i caught her and she knew i hated it... i told her i didn't date smokers and she wanted to date me.... i guess that was a little more incentive... little did i know, she was gonna marry me!

Re: Advice on how to quit smoking..
My mom just quit after almost 50 years of smoking. She was doing 1 pack/day but was as high as 4 packs/day.
She is using the 21mg nictoine patch for now and trying to replace her smoking habits with other ones. Once she adjusts she will go down on dosage.
She said it was difficult but not as hard as she thought. Partly because she was told she could hurt herself if she does the patch and smokes.
If she can do it anyone can!
Some psychotherapy with the patch might also help for those habits...
I tried the patch about 2 yrs ago and it DEFINITELY helped. I don't know if it actually took away my craving or if I was just afraid to smoke w/ the patch on. Either way, it helped me cut down a lot. But i do have to admit that lately I've been smoking more than usual...work and wedding related stress!

Re: Advice on how to quit smoking..
Easiest way to quit????? Catch pneumonia! (J.K.!!) Seriously -- that's the only thing that's worked for me so far. When your lungs are in active revolt against your body -- trust me -- it's not so hard to put down the smokes. I only hope that when this is over - I don't pick them up again!!
As for real advice - I have used the patch, and Wellbutrin, and the gum. None of it worked really well for me. A combo of the patch and wellbutrin did the best I think.
As others have said - you have to WANT to give it up. And that's the hardest part of all.
Good Luck!!

Re: Advice on how to quit smoking..
I smoked for 10 years or so and I quit just over 2 months ago. I quit cold turkey and honestly it wasn’t that bad. I smoked about 3 & 1/2 packs Mon-Thur and 2 packs Fri-Sun I guess that’s about 5 & 1/2 packs a week. I don’t smoke in my house so that made it a bit easier for me not to smoke so much in the winter and my FI doesn’t smoke so that helped also.
I got sick for like 2 days and couldn’t smoke. When I started to feel better I just said to myself 'Lets see how long I can go.' After 4 or 5 days I didn’t want to smoke because I knew how disappointed I would be in myself. I never told myself that I could never smoke again I tried not to put any extra stress on myself . The first 2 weeks were the worst. I advise that you do not drink at all. It makes it really hard. After about 2 weeks I had a few drinks and then I went out to a bar. Because you can’t smoke inside it made it a lot better. When my friends would smoke it was also hard but only for as long as they were smoking. Once they were done with their smoke the craving went away.
Warning.. My FI almost killed me!!! I was very irritable and pi$$ed off all the time but that went away in about 1 & a half months.
Just know this.. after that 2 weeks everyday got easier. I thought about it less and less with each passing day. I still get cravings when I'm drinking but they only last a few minutes. If you can just push past it, it will go away.
I also chew a lot of gum. It gives me something to do with my mouth and keeps my breath fresh. I hop I’ve helped. Good luck!!! If you need any support FM me. BTW that whole food tastes better and things smell better and how much better you feel is BS. I haven’t felt any change.
A big push for me was also that a womens fertitily dropps signifitantly when she smokes. I couldn’t live w/ myself if smoking ever prevented or made it difficult to have children.
Someone once suggested keeping a jurnol for every craving and every feeling she had. She said it helped to see how far she had come after a few days and kept her motovited.

I agree, that's what I am worried about, already have a few issues in that dept, weight, age.. so i don't want to make it worse, if I can help it..

Re: Advice on how to quit smoking..
At my old job, this lady did hypnosis to stop smoking. She stopped after 2 sessions. She went to a place called Positive Changes. I have absolutely no idea how much it costs.
ETA: When I was home last month, I saw an office near Roosevelt Field.
