Re: Advice on how to quit smoking..

I quit when I met my FH. He was not a smoker and was grossed out by it so that helped.
I also went on the patch, started chewing cherry trident and started and exercise program. I did gain about 10 pounds in a month but most of that went away shortly. That was almost 3 years ago.. I feel ALOT better! I also avoided my friends who smoked for a little while until I had enough will power. The only time I ever crave it now is if I'm drinking but I know I wouldn't like it if I had one.

BTW- I was a pack a day weekdays and a pack and a half weekends! Think of all the money you'll save!

How about ... think of your upcoming wedding with a beautiful smile and shiny white teeth. Just want to look great on your wedding day and in front of the camera. Cuz it'll be moments captured forever in pictures.

just a little thought from me.

I remind myself everyday to drink plenty of water so I can have beautiful skin everyday and for the wedding day.

Cold turkey's the only thing that did it for me. I smoked for 9 years and had to completely go cold turkey, just about 2 years ago now. You just have to really want to do it, that's what I found.

I quit cold turkey out of fear after 17 yrs ( i started young) found a lump in neck - still dealing with that.
My friend quit with the help of Welbutrin and didn't even go back.
She swore by it- didn't even gain weight- walked 20 mins. day and up to an hour.
She is still smoke free for almost 2 yrs.
I am after8 months.
Its hard but you will and can do it- when you are ready!!!!!!

Re: Advice on how to quit smoking..

I quit smoking 3 years ago on the patch. I had this really weird experience one day watching my FH smoking and visualizing all this smoke going into his lungs, him blowing it out and them some leftover smoke just stagnatins in the lung. I quit the following day, no joke, on the patch. I told him that if I quit for 1 week that he had to. I did it of course and so did he. I smoked for 10 years, he smoked for 13. You have to do it together and support eachother. My biggest thing was that if I went back ot cheated, I would dissapoint him and he did the same. Never once did either of us go back and still fresh to this day. You can do it. If you need support please FM me. I can't tell you enough that it was the best thing, the healthiest thing I ever did in my life.

Alot of my clients smoke and are going through a study to stop, just like other things though, it's not for everyone. Here are some of my suggestions (easier said than done since I'm not a smoker):

Hypnosis, post motivating pics and quotes around you, patch, substitute smoking with other 'enjoyable' activites, yoga/exercise (when you're in touch with your body you feel great).

I don't think cold turkey is the best method. In my experience anyone who has tried that has just picked up other negative habits (uncontrollable eating, biting nails)
Think about how great you will look and feel!
Good Luck and let us know how you're doing with the struggle

I quit cold turkey and it will be 2 years this May. It wasnt too bad but Ill tell you when I go out I could pick up a cigarette and start again like it was just yesterday that i had that last cigarrette. Its still hard but what doesnt help is that my FH smokes. GOOD LUCK

I quit cold turkey, it was actually easier for me because when I met my FH i smoked, he didn't. It bothered, him, which in turn made me quit, besides the fact that it's bad for you. So I would quit cold turkey, you can do it!

Re: Advice on how to quit smoking..

FH and I quit one month ago. We staggered our quits one week apart so we wouldn't kill each other like the other times we tried. This is my fourth or fifth time trying. I've smoked for 10 yrs. Other times I tried cold turkey (not a chance in hell); the patch, the gum, the inhaler... this time I'm taking Zyban and so far it's THE single most successful quit I've had. I've never quit for this long before and I have faith that it will stick.

FH and I won't smoke just to not let each other down. It's getting easier everyday and it's so worth it. What helped me get ready to quit was reading lots and lots of info about the nicotine addiction. Once you really understand what's going on in your body when you smoke and keep nicotine in your system, it makes it easier to reason out your cravings for reason. At least that helped me. In preparation for my quit, I also made a list of reasons why I wanted to quit and a game plan for what to do when I had cravings. Quitnet.com helped alot too. Good luck!! You can do it!!

Oh the only downside is that even though I've been working out and dieting for months low (and losing weight) I STILL gained 3 lbs since I quit

Re: Advice on how to quit smoking..

My mom tried this:
For a few days count the # of cigs you smoke each day and average it out.

Then, take that amount, say 10, and put them in a plastic baggie. Carry the baggie around with you. (no other cigs). It will force you to think about how many cigs you have left for the day and whether or not you want one then. (its sort of like the food mover from richard simons- when you move all the pictures from one side to the other, you're done eating for the day).

Then as time goes by and you have left over cigs in the bag cut it down. Eventually you won't need any.

Re: Advice on how to quit smoking..

I was a smoker for over 14 years. This past fall I just got to a point where I was ready to quit (this was after I got engaged). My friend had quit from reading a book 'The easy way to quit smoking' by Allen Carr - I was very skeptical that a book would work but I figured it was worth a try.
You can image how surprised I was that after I read the last page I never smoked again . I was even able to go out drinking 3 days after. I will admit, it was hard at times, but I have been smoke free for over 5 months (and my FI smokes as well as some of my friends).

The book also teaches you not to substitute (e.g. gum, food, etc) so I was able to not gain any weight (which was important with the wedding). The book is fairly inexpensive (under $20) so it may be worth a try. Good Luck.

Re: Advice on how to quit smoking..

I smoked for 12 years until at 27 I had a cancer scare. My doctor put me on Zyban and I quit...March 1st was 3 years. I highly recommend trying Zyban. If you really want to quit, you will.
