I just got engaged last month and was originally planning an Oct./Nov. 2012 wedding (Actually, I really wanted a 12/21/2012 date--End of the Mayan Calender/world to celebrate the start of a new, but idea was nixed by fam and MOH). However, upon browsing the forums, I saw that so many of you have a location, vendors, etc. booked already... and I just started looking!!
As a wedding-planning newbie, am I just cutting it too close (and more importantly, will all of you have taken my first choices for vendors already )??

Re: Advice on Wedding Date!
Not at all!!! My one piece of advice would be to start figuring out your budget and guest list to get an idea of size and start to call and visit venues. If you are flexible with date and time, I'm sure you will find something that you love. There is a thread on Brides Helping Brides that can give you an idea of pricing.
Good luck with the search. Ask us any questions, this board is a great resource of information. \
Congratulations and welcome!!

I am sure it is easier if you have more time but I def think you can do it. One of the great things about living in NY/Li area is that there are so many amazingly talented vendors and so many locations available. You have about a year it seems like. Lots of people plan a wedding in even less time than that.
Good Luck enjoy the planing

Re: Advice on Wedding Date!
I feel a bit better now. I was definitely having an 'uh oh' moment. I know I don't have time to dawdle, but the situation was looking bleak for a moment there.
Budget has been set and we looked at a few potential halls yesterday, but nothing that I really liked. The date is flexible, so when I do find the right place, I'm booking whenever it's free--but if I have to wait an extra year, I'd be so disappointed!
Thanks, everyone!

Don't worry, you are fine, you have a lot of time! I planned my wedding in 9 months and had everything I wanted, I also wasn't tied to a specific date, just a season. People do start to plan really early on this board, but you have over a year, you'll be fine! Once you pick the hall everything will start to fall into place!

Re: Advice on Wedding Date!
Start figuring out your budget and guestlist and then from there start looking at halls, churches (if you're getting married in one), photographer, videographer & dj/bands, etc.
Many people plan their wedding in the same amount of time as you're doing (and less) and they're fine!

Re: Advice on Wedding Date!
I'm a Fall (November) 2012 bride who is just getting started planning as well and everything is going just fine! Get your RH booked because ASAP and then you can move on to your inportant vendors (in my opinion, your photographer/dj or band). So far, I'm just starting to meet with photographers, and everyone I've spoken with so far has my date available. It's definitely not too late to get great vendors for your wedding! People plan weddings in much less time than you and I have!! Good luck and if you want any price quotes that I got from the halls I visited for October/November you can send me FM anytime!!! :)

Re: Advice on Wedding Date!
you've got plenty of time!!! there will still be plenty of amazing venues and vendors available on many given dates. it was less than 10 months out when we venue-shopped, and i will admit that some of the dates we originally wanted at particular venues were booked, but there were still plenty more to choose from (since you're flexible on dates, you're in good shape!)
we booked several vendors (flowers, transportation, hair/makeup, etc) the month before our wedding and i was soooo happy with every single one of them (i wouldn't recommend waiting like i did, but we had other things to tend to). as for the band - the original one we wanted WAS booked for our date, but we were even happier that we had to keep looking b/c then we found one that was perfect for us! if you do find that vendors are booked, don't get discouraged... just go back to the drawing board and keep looking. oh, and don't think that there is only one 'best' florist, or band, or photographer or hairstylist - there are so many amazing ones out there.
*** words of advice from my hubby - he used to always say, 'don't let the decision be made for us.' he meant that if we found a vendor we liked, we shouldn't take too much looking for others b/c then the one we like could book in the interim and we wouldn't have it as an option anyway. strategy worked for us! :)

Re: Advice on Wedding Date!
You have tons of time and lots of places and vendors will still be available! I got engaged in March & we're planning to get married in January 2012 and people were trying to get us to book for November/December of this year since they still had lots of slots open.

First of all Congratulations!!! Welcome!
And secondly, you have plently of time. I just got engaged at the begining of the month. I have my hall because it happened to fall into our hands. We couldn't say no. We also have the church and photo/video but that's it and that will be it for awhile. I am going to take some time to enjoy the engagement now

Re: Advice on Wedding Date!
Congrats on your engagement! I just wanted to add that I think in general girls on here are more of the anomaly than the rule when it comes to planning. We are obviously all a little wedding-obsessed and I think we get stuff done a little quicker than the general public! I think the rest of the world plans things within the 8 month to a year range lol.

Re: Advice on Wedding Date!
First off Congrats on your engagement! You have plenty of time to start the planning, you're not even at the 1 year mark yet. We booked our hall a little under a year away from our date and still have vendors to book. Take your time, research, and enjoy the process.

Re: Advice on Wedding Date!
Congrats on your engagement! You have plenty of time to plan. Typically most brides start at the year mark. My friend is planning her wedding in 4 months so you have plenty of time. Just do your research on vendors and don't feel like you have to rush to book someone.

I think that you have plenty of time to plan your wedding. I would decide on your date and venue soon though so that you can start booking vendors. Your first choices may already be booked because us LIW ladies book things early in advance...lol.
