DH & I were invited to a wedding that we can not attend, however, this couple attended our wedding this past summer and gave us $300 as a gift. They are friends of ours but not close we don't really hang out with them.
Unfortunately, DH & I can not attend their wedding this summer. Do we have to give them the same amount or since we will be RSVP 'NO' and they won't have to pay for our seats, do we give less?
What would you give: $300 a lesser amount a really nice gift off their registry
THANKS!

Re: ADVICE PLEASE!
I would definately give a lesser amount. When you don't attend the wedding you don't need to 'cover your plate'. I think $150 is more than enough.

Re: ADVICE PLEASE!
Tough call, I would say do what you can afford. It stinks! If I was in your situation I would do $300. I always try to do reciprocal to what the person gave me because I would feel cheap if I didn't. I have three older sisters and my parents have always done it that way and those that have attended their weddings did. (I am by NO means calling you cheap but i would feel cheap not giving the same). I have just always been raised that way. Even though, I don't attend a wedding, I still give people what I would have given them anyway. I don't look at a wedding as paying for plate. I think it is only right. I would hope others would so the same for me. IMO! Good Luck!

Re: ADVICE PLEASE!
You're never obligated to give what you received. Give what you can afford and what you think is appropriate.
A nice gift off their registry or $200 seems appropriate to me, especially since you aren't attending the wedding and are not close with them.

Re: ADVICE PLEASE!
I just had a similar dilemma. We bought them a beautiful glass pitcher from Tiffany's. $150.00

Re: ADVICE PLEASE!
we went to a wedding last year and gave a certain amount, the couple could not attend our wedding and they gave us a check with less- we completely understand why...it makes sense
We are invited to a wedding and we are not sure if we are able to go yet- we will give a little less...
IF I WERE CLOSE to the person, I would give the same amount they gave me!

Re: ADVICE PLEASE!
I think either less - 100-150 or a gift from the registry!
NOT 300

I would do $300 but only because I'm always worried about offending people.

I agree! I might actually get them a nice gift for their house- probably something in the 100-150 range

Re: ADVICE PLEASE!
I somewhat agree with gonzo23456... I always thought the plate number was guidance for what to give as a gift, not that you're actually covering your plate. FH and I have this argument all the time and we end up having to meet half way most of the time, but for myself, I want to give them what I can afford to help them start their lives together. Again - that's just me. I understand why people give less for not attending.
I also wouldn't match for the sake of matching - give what you feel is appropriate.
