Not being a racist....but where are the hairstylists and make-up artists that cater to Black women? Did anyone on these boards have any luck as of yet or nformation?

Re: AFRICAN-AMERICAN BRIDES
You know, I have thought about pressing my hair and then adding pieces for fullness when I put it up- the only thing is what about the HM? I thought about maybe delaying it a day so I can get some cornrows or something right before we leave.
I talked to one of BMs and she said maybe I should reconsider perming and try getting spaghetti or invisible braids that I can wear up as well. I am trying to find styles on web and in magazines but nothing yet.

Re: AFRICAN-AMERICAN BRIDES
I've been having a difficult time finding a makeup person. I went for a trial, and the woman couldn't get the correct color foundation for my skin (my skin is fair). Either the color was too dark or too light. I distinctly told her that my complexion was a cross between Vanessa Williams and Michael Michele. I thought that would have helped her find the correct color... but it didn't. Just the way the makeup was applied really disappointed me. And remember that each trial costs - I don't want to waste any more money or time.
I have just about given up on finding a makeup person, so I am glad that you posted this question.

Re: AFRICAN-AMERICAN BRIDES
Well, I trial with Lynda tommorrow, so I'll let you all know. I'll post pictures too.
Also, Lynda is building her book, so she's really inexpensive right now. But she's trying to make the move to film, so she books kinda early.
Her info on my budget vendor website eariler in this post.
My little sister (hairdresser) is doing all the hair. We'll probably put a piece in, since I want it long.

Tammy, I think I've seen your photos in Casarino's photo album - I could be mistaken. I noticed that you got married at Fox Hollow, which is where I am getting married. You looked gorgeous. Did you ever post a review on them?

Re: AFRICAN-AMERICAN BRIDES
Thanks, it was probably me. They said they might make a book with our pics. I'll bump up the review on the review board.
I'm making another plug for my make-up artist too. She really was so great, she stayed the whole day with me for like $50 more. I felt like a princess, it was so great.

Re: AFRICAN-AMERICAN BRIDES
Good luck...we'll be waiting for the review...just a side note...from all of my reading I know most of us love MAC especially me, but I keep reading Bobbi Brown cosmetics are excellent for Black skin because of the yellow undertone. Their website is very in-depth down to application, color, what product matches up with what and etc...check it out

Re: AFRICAN-AMERICAN BRIDES
Sure. The hairstylist I am using is Dominican. I've been going to her for 13 years. I don't frequent her salon as often as I would like, because her salon is really out of my way; however, I do use her for special occassions or special events.
Her name is Attaty and the name of her salon is Mariatty. Her salon is in Fort Washington.
Her English is very limited, but she and her entire staff are VERY, VERY good. If she is not available, there is a woman name Mari (she used to do my hair when Atty was on vacation). The phone number is: 212-781-7363.
Good luck my sisters.

Re: AFRICAN-AMERICAN BRIDES
I am sooooo glad that this question has been posted! I'm having a destination wedding, so may probably be doing my own make-up. I'm seeing that MAC comestics may be the way to go. What about hairstyles? I have natural hair and I don't want to press it (my hair is very, very weird), so I'm thinking microbraids. Any ideas on styles?? Up? Down? Half up/down?? Just looking for suggestions....
Thanks! :)

Re: AFRICAN-AMERICAN BRIDES
St. Croix is a beautiful place...I've visited a few times...I travel often to the Islands and the best hairstyles that worked for me were braids (neat to the end), or a weave (simple style usually a part down the middle and shoulder length or a little longer)...keep in mind it is the grade of hair if your thinking along these lines...don't sacrifice on human hair...custom blended to your own texture and color if possible...or you can mix permed yaki with a european straight....the hair is not weighted down and not fly away either it seems to have the right balance...or just go natural and worry about maintaining a style daily...between the sun, sand, and humidity choose something easy....you want comfort during the day if your swimming or sightseeing but you want to look good if you're partying at night too

Re: AFRICAN-AMERICAN BRIDES
Comfort is the key...because it gets HOT down there! I was concerned about the effects of the salt water on the braids, so my cousin suggested a swim cap. Hmm.... I just don't know if that'll work. Anyway, thanks for advice. :)

Re: AFRICAN-AMERICAN BRIDES
Hi Ladies...
I am so happy to see this post. It is really doing wonders for me. I'm not up to that part of my planning, but this post saves me a lot of 'guess work'.
I typically use Lancome cosmetics which works well for me. They actually have the perfect shade for my skin and I love all of their skin care products. I've had people at the counter makeup my face and I've been pleased with the results, but I'm not sure what to do about hair and makeup for my wedding. I may go to my regular salon, day of the wedding and have her do an elegant updo.
I wish there was a clear resource for African American &/or Hispanic (I am both) people to reference for these things!
Thanks ladies!

Re: AFRICAN-AMERICAN BRIDES
I saw your post, you look gorgeous!!!!! I like both the 2nd and 3rd look. The first look is gorgeous, but not glamorous enough. The 3rd look (purple) was absolutely stunning.
Wow - beautiful! I love the purple - the color just pops out so nicely.
I noticed that you guys spent two hours - just curious why would it take so long?
I've never done a trial, and was wondering if it usually takes that long.

Re: AFRICAN-AMERICAN BRIDES
Because Lynda likes to do as many looks as you feel, around 3, to give you all your options. She comes to your house too. Most trials are about 1 hour I think, but I think you only get one look.

Re: AFRICAN-AMERICAN BRIDES
If you can get Jennifer from Fairytale Makeovers or Jaqueline Nicole from Pretty Me they both do great airbrushing and very beautifully done makeup. They both have experience with AA makeup. Jennifer did my makeup for my wedding and it was beautiful and lasted all day and I did not need to be touched up except my lipstick. Good luck and happy planning.
