Is anyone concerned about the $$ they spent on thier wedding (this is for those who had to foot the bill themselves)?
It seems like most people basically spend alot of money and dont have alot after but start saving all over again? I wonder if that is true or just an wrong impression that I got.
MY friend just got married and they spent every dime they had literally. She said its all she dreamed of as a little girl so its worth it and is not concerned.

Re: After the wedding..$$$$
You make the money back...I think about half, but it's what you spent in the first place right? I dont think we will make anything back, we have to use that money for honeymoon, to pay back my mom for what shes giving us ( shes doesnt have much either, I dont feel comfortable using it) and then for things like a house...ugghh...kinda depressing huh?

Re: After the wedding..$$$$
you make some money back, some close friends and family will give you good $$.... dont expect to make back all you spent though.... my cousin actually went into debt from her wedding and took several years after to pay it off... they had to keep renting because of it... you have to prioritize, look at what you have total, then decide ' is the nicer photographer worth it for $500 more or should i buy 32'tv instead....'...
there is no right or wrong answer!!!!!!!!
I always wanted a nice wedding, but my priority is money for a house so we set a small budget, there were certain things that were important to spend more on(like photo and video that will last after the day ends).... but we cut back on other things, we aren't getting the Rolls, just a big limo.... we went with the cheapest florist(with good work)..... we liked 2 halls, one was going to be $1500 more, so we picked the cheaper one since we knew it would be beautiful at either place)

It's very hard to not get in debt with the wedding expenses, I guess you have to terms with having a little debt, but just stick to paying it off after, and budget carefully before. You really do have to prioritize and make your wedding plans carefully really weighing the costs of your vendors.

FH and i are trying to store away money now for after the wedding because we are trying to buy a house right after the wedding. Also we would like to start a family in the up coming next year so money has to be put away.

NEVER count on money you don't have in the bank- that's for 'making money on the wedding' to sales commissions- if you don't have it in the bank, it's not yours to count on!
Be very careful going into debt having a wedding- the stress of repayment is something no new marriage should have to bear.

Re: After the wedding..$$$$
We are very concerned about the money we've spent on this wedding. As far as I'm concerned, it's lost money. I don't plan to have a dime when this is all over (in 5 days!).
It's a hard fact to reconcile, considering we don't have a house. But, it's a once in a lifetime event. We can always make more money, but this is the only time we will do this

Re: After the wedding..$$$$
as someone who has recently experienced this, let me give you a little newlywed advice.
please do not spend money that you do not have. i have seen too many brides on these boards who drive their credit cards to the max, saying 'we'll pay them off with the wedding money.'
unless your guests have been recently involved in planning a LI/NYC wedding, they have NO IDEA how expensive things are. the majority of people do not cover their plate, much less the other items - photographer, videographer, limos, flowers, etc. if you plan your wedding in the hopes of making some sort of profit, you will be sorely disappointed.
plan the day that you and your FH want, but keep in mind that your wedding day (although important) is just ONE day of your life. do you really want to be paying for your wedding day 5 years from now???
just a little friendly NW advice

Re: After the wedding..$$$$
We are not counting on any money we could potentially make at the wedding to pay for it. We are hoping to get 10K in gifts but if we get that or don't it won't matter either way.
We are in a different position than most though because we have the cash to cover the wedding ourselves and we already own a house BUT we no longer live in NY so that makes it easier for us to do those things.
Hats off to those of you that stay here, it's a rat race. We are trying to get our families to move out by us.

Re: After the wedding..$$$$
We are trying to pay something off each month in Cash....We hope to just make enough back from gifts to 'repay' the savings account --on the reception. Everything else we lay out is 'gone'....So...I go w/out new spring clothes or shoes, no weekend getaways, basically nothing!!!! I have only charged my wedding dress deposit ---but I know that will change very soon. I got a seperate credit card w/ no annual fee or interest for 6 months...so that helps a little (?)...I am working a second job, and he got a coaching gig (soccer) one night a week, and something that does help is having flexible spending account at work for my LIRR ticket..so that money I get back can be used for a wedding expense..it is tough and my father tells me and my mother too, buy a house w/ the wedding money and skip the wedding....of course they are divorced and have had the wedding....we are not going crazy, but it will be classy and elegant affair... (thanks for listening : )

Re: After the wedding..$$$$
As we all know weddings on LI cost a small fortune. We only spent money we had allocated for the wedding. While we spent a lot of money we don't regret what we spent. The gifts we received were generous and we were able to put a lot of money into our savings, even after getting things for our new home. Having said that, our gifts did not equal the amount of money we spent on the wedding. IMO, most people spend more than they get in gifts. I don't think anyone should spend all their savings on their wedding and should always keep a 4-6 months security amount in the bank. On LI, weddings, homes, etc. cost so much but the area has so much to offer. Everyone has to do what is right for themselves.

we are assuming that what we spend is money we will never see again. and we are not going into debt - it will all be paid off in cash before the wedding.

Re: After the wedding..$$$$
Believe it or not we think the wedding HELPED us to save. We paid for the wedding oursleves but received nice 'gifts' from my dad, my mom and DH's mom. We saved a certain amount of money each month (each of us) and put it in an account. We did this for a year. From this we paid all of our vendors, our favors things like that. My dad paid for my dress. I paid for hair, makeup and accessories from my account and DH paid for any of his things from his acct (although his tux was free). We had to take I think $2000 each out of our accounts for the HM.
The money from our parents, our account and the very generous gifts from the wedding (we were actually shocked at how much we got b/c we weren't expecting much) actually paid for the whole wedding so we actually just paid for some of our HM. We even had left over $$ for spending $$ on the HM. Overall, we had a fat bank account after the wedding that we wouldn't have had if we didn't save so much
Overall we were VERY happy we had the wedding

Re: After the wedding..$$$$
we made back $$ from all the generous gifts but we still spent a lot. Did we have an awesome wedding? yes, did we go overboard, yes!!!! If i had to do it again, I would cut corners in certain areas. We want to buy a house and cant now because we spent it onthe wedding. but we paid for the wedding ourselves which was an accomplishment!
