afternoon vs. night reception??

afternoon vs. night reception??

I'm trying to decide whether to go w/ a Saterday afternoon reception on the water (1-6), or a night wedding at a different place? I like the whole idea of an afternoon wedding on the water but my relatives are concerned it won't feel like a wedding or that people won't 'less loose' as they would on a Saterday night! Has anyone been to or had an afternoon wedding? Should I be concerned?

my wedding is an afternoon wedding and I'm worried about the same thing -- it's too late for me but if I had to do it all over again I would find a way to have an evening wedding

I had the same concern about people not letting loose at a day wedding. I am getting married in the evening on the water. I am glad I was able to afford a night wedding, but whenever I go visit my hall, I always say how gorgeous it looks in the daytime and I wish I could have some daylight so my guests could see the gorgeous view.

That is our problem - we are getting married in Oct and a Sat. evening reception would not start until 7:30 at this RH, so it would be dark when we got there and the view would be lost. I really love it there, but If we do end up going with Sat. evening I think we might as well go with a cheaper place.

If you might be willing to move your wedding to a sunday, you might be able to do a twilight event. So it will start out light at 3 or 4pm or so, and then my the time everyone is eating an dancing the sun is setting!

We are doing this in the winter -- so when we start the ceremony at 3 it will be daylight, but by the time cocktail hour is over the sun will be starting to set.

i am having an afternoon wedding, but i wanted a different feel... I have been to 1 afternoon wedding and let me tell you, everyoneeee partied hard... very hard lol so i think it depends on what type of crowd you will have, not the time of day!

ive been to afternoon weddings before and if you have a good crowd they will party no matter what. Its just about personal preference, your wedding will be amazing whether its afternoon or evening.

I have been to a day wedding, and people partied. Of course, after the wedding we wanted to go somewhere else, because it was too early to go home. I personally like a evening wedding because you allow more time to get ready. It all depends on your preference.

I am having a Saturday afternoon wedding, mainly because of the price difference from a Saturday night, and FH was against a Friday or Sunday night wedding.

I don't think its going to make a difference, people will still be in party mode. If you want, you can throw some sort of 'after party' to keep it going.

I think its going to be nice since my cocktail hour will be out in the garden so hopefully it will be a nice sunny afternoon!

The only downfall i would say is that i would have to get up really early to get ready, but i doubt ill be able to sleep anyway!

Do you think it will be difficult finding a place for hair/makeup that early (the ceremony would be at 10:30am if we go with the Sat. afternoon)?

Not at all. Many place are fully prepared to have you ready to go that early. The better question is - are you willing to get up @ 5am the day of your wedding? And are guests going to be bothered by having to be @ church by 10:30?

Re: afternoon vs. night reception??

I agree that it depends on your guests. I've been to night weddings where the guests all sat around at their table looked bored!

For me, it was important to have a night wedding because I just associate the nighttime with romance, excitement, indulgence, etc. and I just knew it was what I wanted for my special day. As for the daytime appearance, if you could manage a summer wedding then you should be able to have the best of both worlds. I'm getting married in July and hoping that it will still be light out during my (hopefully outdoor) ceremony. Also, as someone else mentioned, a Sunday twilight wedding could be great.

Good luck!

many girls on here hire make up and hair stylists to come to them the day of the wedding, either their house or wherever they are getting ready. And yes alot of bridal hair and make up artists do this

we had a daytime wedding, and it was great!! if people want to party, they will, no matter what the time. it was really nice to go home and just unwind after the wedding. i'm sure some of the guests appreciated that as well - no need to rush home and get to bed, you just go home and chill. for me personally, i crash around 10pm, so night weddings are sometimes hard for me. i loved my daytime wedding

not at all. i wanted to be at my RH by 9 so we could take pics before the ceremony, and my hair and make up girls got to the hotel at 5am.

I would have loved an evening wedding, but we couldn;t afford it. The menu we have planned would have doubled in price and the entertainment costs about 30% more for an evening affair. By having an afternoon reception we saved 18k.

it is only money though.......

this is so true!

i would have preferred to have a night wedding, but my hall wanted a guarantee of 200 which is understandable, & we werent wiling to do that, nor go to another hall to have a night wedding. It all worked out in the end though because we have a 6:30am flight the next day for the HM.

P.S. make sure u have a fantastic band/dj if your reception ends late because if people are bored they will leave early.

my MU artist and Hair stylist are coming to our hotel at 6am and I plan on being out of the hotel by 9:45 am for pics at our RH. Grante, we won't all be rollin' out at the same time, but FH and I want our photos and family pics taken first and the rest of my girls and other friends and family will be arriving in time to rehrearse our wedding at 11:30am

The view probably won't be lost it will just be different. you will see all the light reflecting off the water rather that the water and land that you would normally see during the day.
