AHHHH...So I got called to be on the Dr. Phil show

with brides to be and their FMILs, but I CAN'T GO I'm so sad. They want me to fly out there Oct 21, but my play doens't end until Oct 22. I am so ridiculously disappointed.

And now my friends and family are confusing me. They're telling me to drop the play and go b/c this is more important, taking care of things with my in-laws...but ..I have no understudy and the play opens in a week and a half. I just don't think I could do that

Can't they train an understudy by the end of October so that you can miss the last night or two?

Jenn,

I think you should talk to your directors and see if they can find an understudy. I am sure you'll be able to train her well. I know how upset the situation with your FMIL has made you and I think that working on it is so very important. It's such a tough situation.

I don't know they were going to call her to ask her, but then they were like 'one more thing.can you make it these dates'

I'm going to talk to the director, but...I don't know...the show opens on the 19th which is only a week and ahalf away. The think is its an ensemble pieve and everyone plays several roles so they could probably train someone already in the cast...but I'm afraid to even say something. How would I approach the topic, even?

How close are you w/ the director? Maybe just say something like you have a good opportunity out of state but would need to have someone cover 1 or 2 shows?

I'm very clow with him, which is why I don't want to disappint him. Plus he'd probably have the new person do all the shows. it wouldn;t be fair for me to give up my spot and still get to go a few shows. I'd be missing 3 out of5 shows

You have to do whats best for you. That being said you have to decide if you think that by appearing on the show, if it could make things better or worse with your FMIL. If you feel, in your heart, that it will, then explain that to your director. If you feel it could go either way, then it may be worth investigating a 'relationship' counselor here in NY. This way you can address the issues that cause you so much grief and heartache and not disappoint your director or yourself. It is quite a predicament.

I am trying to figure out a way to develop a decent realtionship with my FMIL. She doesn't put me through the things that you have shared with us, but considering that she will be in my life for as long as she lives (shes only 57 as compared to MY mother who is 73 - so it will be a loooooong time) I have to find a way to make it work. Please share with us, if you feel comfortable how you were able to do this when and if you do!

1 of my concerns is that if you do go on the show and nothing comes of it - it doesn't help - then you'll feel worse b/c you gave up your show. Plus it might makes things worse w/ FMIL and she'll have more reasons to b*tch and moan - 'can you believe she called the Dr. Phil show' blah blah blah.

I think you should do two things -
Ask your director if you can get an understudy for the last few shows.
AND
The Dr. Phil people want you to come there on the 21st, do you know which day they are actually taping? If its not until 2 or 3 days later, maybe you can explain your situation.

I think it would be a great opportunity for you. But you also have to think - do you want the whole world to know your issues?

I'd definitely see if they could train an understudy. Dr. Phil could be such a wonderful opportunity to straighten things out for the rest of your life & to improve your relationship.
