Album-Traditinal or Digital/Soho

Album-Traditinal or Digital/Soho

Has anyone decided on what type of album you want to have?

I hear the digital ones are spectacular. What are you choosing?

I know digital may be more costly. But is it worth it? Its so hard to decide.

I think the digital albums are nice, but i went for the more traditional album. I might have a small digital album done, but I like the idea of real matted pictures like my parents/grandparents had. Looks classic as opposed to just a book.

Very confused about this myself.....The photographers are pushing the digital albums but I think the more traditional style is more costly to do. Are they less expensive, I just can't get it straight. Plus the digital albums use alot more 'images' per page and the studios are giving packages with X amount of 'images' . Can anyone clear this up?

Oh, and why are these guys getting away without providing paper proofs, seems to be the other thing they are saving $ on, telling us the digital cd is so wonderful. How are we suppose to put albums together off a computer screen? YIKES..............

see i feel the same way about the digital and traditional. I like the traditional bc i feel like the digital can get to busy...its hard to actually concentrate on the pcitures when there are sooo many on one page. i think they are pushing the digital because it lets them be more creative but it also gives them a reason to charge more....you get more pictures so your goignt obe charged more...i dont know...

Most photographers offer both- I am getting a large 175 photo magazine style album AND a smaller 30 photo traditional album.

I also received a hard copy of every proof and placed them in albums and also got my proofs on CD so I can create additional albums or on your own.

Good Luck!

We chose to go with a traditional album (matted photos in thick pages) b/c that's something we can't do on our own without our photographer.

B/c we get our shots on disc and our B&W negs after we are done making the album, we will at some point find a free-lancer or do a digital album ourselves. Digital albums can range from coffee table-like books, to books that are like yearbooks, to books with thick pages where the shots are collages that are full bleed to the edges of the pages.

What are digital albums?

Digital albums are when the photos are printed directly onto the album page and the photographer adds graphics to make it look more like a scrapbook. There is usually up to 3 or more images per page. Whereas a traditional album usually has only one large photo and maybe a smaller photo per page and the photos have matting around them. They look like photographs, not computer images.

(Maybe someone can explain better)

I am stuck with my decision too. I would love to see what the photographer can do with a digital album but I am old fashioned and like the traditional ones like mom and dad's. I was told though that all my proofs will be 4x6 regardless of which album I decide on. I need FH's opinion.

Same for us.

I didn't want to look back at our wedding album in 20 years from now, and have it remind me of a high school yearbook!

I mean, obviously, the artists who create the digital albums are much much much more talented ... I give them a lot of credit, some of the albums are just gorgeous. But I personally just want to see the photos, not the digital special effects.

ETA: We got printed proofs, a CD of our proofs, and will receive negatives too when the process is done.

WE are using the digital albums. I just think the pictures will not get ruin after time and u add various images to a page.

We did traditional, I like the idea of it always being something I love, the digital I love but there is alot of graphical stuff, I didnt want my professional album to be that way

We are not doing the magazine style. We are going more traditional.

We're going with the Digital. Me and FH both like the more modern look. Plus, we get alot more photos.

We DIYED our own digitally but we also printed out our CD pics and made a more traditional album printing through Kodakgallery so we will have it in 20 years for our kids.

I personally like pictures in all formats. What I love about digital is you can set a 'mood' in your album by using colors and design and working the pics with certain effects to give that truly romantic vibe. You can use the colord from your wedding also, to enhance your photos. When I work on albums for events I always use the digital format because its just easier, though I DO still use traditional albums for pics DH and I use around the house.

We had done our own album in a coffee table style but since my SIL is a photographer, I plan to redo it in a flushmount format now that I know my way around the layouts better, and I will have her preint it for me.

These are examples of digital-you can use everal more per page and of course unlike traditional albums, the pages are flat so you dont get that 'real picture' texture. Its just a matter of preference.

Traditional is the more matted look-usually basic black background.

i have to tell you guys that most albums are printed digitally. Most prints are not done via negative to paper anymore unless your photograph still shoots from a standard non digital / film camera.

BUT photographers print their digital prints through amazing printers/papers that will have no problem lasting for years. Archival papers have been guaranteed for 100 years. That being said - they may fade over time in direct sunlight/heat. But i really doubt anyone uses their wedding album that much IoI

This is from what I have known through photographers and doing photography myself.

GETTING BACK TO ALBUMS:

I am getting a traditional album which has digital prints but is matted such in a way that looks traditional. No collages for me! I can do that myself and I find it very distracting having layers of photographs and every effect in photoshop done to your pics. A wedding album should be current, classical, flawless and shows the best your photographer has done with the variety of pics of your day.

The digital/collage album that I will work on once I get my proofs on cd will be more of a showcase of my talents and more text telling the story of our day. It really is a book about the day.

We are defiantly doing the ultra modern, magazine style albums.

Agree! We're going to get all proofs on cd and we can make our own collage album later....we wanted the more traditional album now
