I was wondering would a caterer let someone else supply the alcohol and only charge a service fee or handing out drinks. I have a friend who is a liquor distributor and am wondering If I would be able to stock the bar and avoid paying a caterer. Would there be any other issues I am missing?

There are legal issues in NY state. I doubt they would do it for other reasons. If there is a problem with the alcohol no one will know it's an outside distributor they will only attach it to the caterer's reputation.
Can't hurt to ask but I sincerely doubt it.

actually sometimes they will let you...
i am getting married upstate but a couple of places ONLY did it that way- they didn't have a liquor license to avoid all the issues.
