Alcohol Allergy

Alcohol Allergy

I have a strange reaction when I drink alcoholic beverages...itchy hands, itchy feet, big blotches all over, swollen cherry red lips... not very attractive! But it doesn't make me sick or anything. I want to be able to have at least one drink at my wedding and not turn into a tomato for the pics - does anyone have any suggestions? Some people have told me to try an antihistamine but I figured I'd ask you girls as well. (This is apparently the 'Asian flush' as I am half Vietnamese...) HELP!!!!

Yikes! Why not try a different drink? Does it happen with all drinks?

Actually my mom gets this whenever she drinks alcohol with sulfites in it (wine, wine coolers, pina coladas, etc.) I made her a pina colada once and it was so bad she took benadryl and almost went to the hospital. Try and stay away from drinks with sulfites in them and see how you feel.

Everyone in my family gets this. Does this happen with just a sip? I would be careful with benadryl it may make you drowsy... maybe a more watered down drink?

Why don't you see if you can get prednisone for the day. Why not bring this up to your doctor or allergist if you have one. I am sure they can give you a day rx or something to that effect. I know at work when we have pts that are mildly allergic to shellfish or iodine for ct scans with iv we have them call there dr so their dr can give them an rx for prednisone to counteract the allergy they have to the ct dye.

I developed reactions to alcohol that isn't clear. I actually get a burning sensation on my sides when I have something like tequila. So, I experimented and learned that the drink that agrees with me most is a vodka tonic.

Wow, thank you girls so much!! Sulfites...I think I remember reading something about that... I definitely will mention it to my doctor. It seems to happen to me regardless of what I drink, but it's certainly worse when I have wine.

I have heard poeple are allergic to alcohol ... hmm, what did you drink? or is it all drinks? Maybe you can try something with a little bit of alcohol ... like more fruity drinks?

Stay away from alchols with Sulfites in it. Thats what causes the flush. Go online & find out what brands & alchols dont have it.

You name it, I've tried it... Cider, vodka, rum (Malibu pineapples are my favorite!) I guess this is my body's way of telling me not to drink! LOL But I'm not giving in! I'll find a way gosh darnit!
