All Italian / Sicilian Brides

Are you doing anything at your cermony or at the reception to show your hertiage?

At the church: I am leaving flowers for the blessed mother. Might have best friend (MOH) do a reading in Italian.
At the reception: Dancing a tarantella. Italian chicken dance. Carrying a buste bag. Cannoli cream filling in the cake.

Don't know about the Sicilian things. I am Napolitana, Abruzzesa and Romana.

My fiance is Polish (he was born and raised there) so I can't take over with too many Italian things.

Theresa- I was just talking to my parents about this last weekend - the Italian Confetti Almonds are a must at the reception- there is a little Italian shop in Glen Cove -the owners are from Italy and are very old school with a lot of Italian favors and provided me with a scroll explaing the history of the confetti. At the mass- the flowers for Mary. Reception - Dancing a tarantella.

I am also interested in seeing what other brides are doing.....

PS- you are from HB right? My father was a doctor there for 25 years - on 83rd Street!

Flowers for the Blessed Mother during the Ave Maria at the Mass. At the reception there will be a few Italian songs (not the typical ones) but I love the slow song Ti Sposaro Perche. Then jordan almonds of course!! That is all I have thought of for now. FI is Italian but like 4th generation. I am first generation born in America so I thought we would compromise and not go crazy!

We'll be dancing the tarantella at the reception. My family is from Naples & Sicily and his family is from Rome...but neither of us are 'very Italian' as far as following traditions and such...though we certainly *look* very Italian. We aren't very traditional people period.

My dad used to bring us all the great Italian meats, pastries and pizza from there - he said 'LI has NOTHING compared to HB'!

Maybe play a few Italian songs. Definately 'Volare'. My grandpa always used to sing it (he's deceased ).

FH is from Alabama so I don't want to scare his family with too much ethnic stuff!

I'm doing the flowers for the Blessed Mother, Ave Maria, doing the tarantella at the reception and the almonds in odd numbers.

For the Sicilian side of my family, the night before the wedding I'm gonna wear green PJ's (Grandma told me that green signifies luck) and the sambucca with the 3 coffee beans.

I am not Italian but my wedding was 1/2 Italian since my husband is an italian. Well all of the food at our reception was italian, we had the almond candy stuff, canoli filling in the cake, alot of italian music including tarantella, our first first dance was by Andrea Bocelli 'Vivo per Lei' and some other details I can't remember right now.

Similar to Annie, I hadn't thought too much about this for fear of scaring FH's family. We're not having a super-religious ceremony (no mass or anything) and I don't know how to dance the tarantella either...hmm...maybe we'll have cannoli cream in our cake.

DH and I tried to incorporate some tradition in our ceremony and reception...he's Irish, I am of Irish and Italian heritage.

To represent Italian tradition-

Definitely dance the tarantella!!

Our favors were donations to ACS-and we tied confetti (almonds) to the scroll. There should be an odd # of almonds to each favor so that, like a good marriage, it cannot be divided! We used 5-one each for fertility, health, happiness, longevity and wealth.

My MOH (sister) gave me green PJs to wear the night before-for luck.

Italian superstition says bride shouldn't wear gold on her wedding day.

Italian friends who were recently married shattered a glass at the reception-the # of pieces is supposed to equal the # of happy years they'll share

Our friends also had the best man cut little pieces of the groom's tie and sold them off during the reception. Make sure groom knows about this and brings a cheap tie to cut!!

Re: All Italian / Sicilian Brides

I did the traditional father/daughter dance, Lauretta. What a TEAR JERKER !
We played lots of Italian music, we're really BIG on ITalian pop, Laura Pausini, Eros Ramazotti, 883, the oldies but goodies: Claudio Villa, Toto Cotugno, Umberto Tozzi, new stuff from the Festival SanRemo my list goes on and on. This is BIGGIE for me. Gente di Mare is one of our all time favorites, my siblings and I were on the dance floor on a big circle holding hands singing at the tops of our lungs 'L'italiano' (also known as Lasciatemi Cantare is HUGE in my family, we know it word for word...) my wedding was a nice mix if Italian and Armenian music and dancing (Aremenian is almost identical to Greek dancing and music)... The priest also said part of the readings in Italian (per my request) We had a Bible reading in Italian, a song in Armenian. i wrote a note in italian to my nonni in my program...
Im just a little GUNGHO ITalian... We're those people that are parading around little italy with the Italian flag when they win the world cup
We get a little carried away

Julie- what part of Abbruzzo? my parents are from Provincia Pescara.. known for its gorgeous beaches

Ok, now I got the itch to go back to Italy..

I have enough of those confetti from Sulmuna (Straight from the factory) in my house to last forever!

I am not sure about where in Abbruzzi my great grandparents were from. I can ask my mom and find out. My great aunt would know (it was her mother)
