All the parents meet?

How was your experience when all the parents met for the first time? It's coming up soon for me, so I'm getting a little nervous. I may have to bring LOTS of wine that night!

Re: All the parents meet?

My Fi's father lives out of the country and he came to visit shortly after we got engaged. We had a dinner for him at my house and it was definitely awkward in the beginning but as soon as the conversation gets going it was fine. My mom worked with his mom for 20 years (how we met) so that one was easy. I think the nervousness is definitely more on your part so just relax and it'll be fine.

Re: All the parents meet?

My FH is more worried about it I think - My parents are VERY conservative and quiet while his parents are more jovial and outspoken. He is afraid they say something that will offend my parents. His parents are divorced and he wants them to meet his father first - but my parents insist on meeting his mother first. I get to put this off a little longer though because since he is another state now it is harder to arrange something especially when he will only be around over the holidays when everyone is really too busy to get together. Let me know how it goes. Good luck I'm sure it will be fine. Listen did you see the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding - That scene where their parents meet is classic - That is more like our families (except mine are exactly like the guys parents)

Re: All the parents meet?

The first time out parents met was at a Christmas Party at FH's parents house. It went over smoother than I could have ever anticipated (this was about 5 years ago) I thought my parents would be there for about an hour to make their appearance and then leave. Everyone got along so well that at the end of the night it was just me, fg, his parents, my parents and thier life-long best friends. We all sat around the dingin room table shooting the breeze...it was great! n fact I think I left before my parents did! I think if it is more of a social situation and not so muc the pressure of 'the in-laws first meeting' that it helps a lot.

Re: All the parents meet?

The first time our parents met was when they came for a visit to NY while we were home during one of our crazy planning weekends! FI parents wanted to see where the wedding was a check out the hotels, etc. His parents actually stayed at my parent's house!! It was very funny..me, FH, his parents and my parents all hanging out in the morning drinking coffee! But they all got along great! FI and I actually had a wedding to go to the Sat night his parents were in town, so my parents were left to entertain and they all went to dinner and to see 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding!' It was almost too close for comfort! Our parents had a double date! AHH! But hey, I'd rahter they get along too well than hate each other. We joke that there may not be issues with spliting holidays...we'll all just hang out together!

Re: All the parents meet?

My parents haven't met my FIL's yet. My engagement party is in January where they will all meet.

But I will tell you, it was nerve wracking when I met his father, cause I wanted to make a great impression and when he came up to meet my folks, I was more worried about my FH meeting my father than my mother.

My father still has reservations, i think it's because he doesn't like the way we met.

Re: All the parents meet?

We've been engaged since March and have most of the wedding plans complete and our parents still haven't met! I'm kind of nervous because my parents are more conservative and his are well, wacky!! My FH feels the same way. I'm kind of dreading it. I don't think they will have anything in common and someone will be offended. We've been pushing it off but both sides want to meet. We'll have to do it sooner or later.

Re: All the parents meet?

Just be prepared for the worst and you will be fine. Our parents met but are completely different people and will never be great friends. I felt like I was responsible for keeping everyone together and having everyone be best friends and it was stressing me out. Now I realize they will never be best friends but will be cordial at family events. I also realize I can not possible make everyone get along and be happy with one another.

Re: All the parents meet?

Our Parents met for the first time about a year into us dating. Everything went better than expected. My parents get along with everyone. My dad is old fashion so I was a little worried there. My FMIL is great, we get along soooo well so i knew it would be fine. My FFLI says exactly what is on his mind so it thought he would clash with my dad, But They get along so well. I really couldn't ask for anything more.

Re: All the parents meet?

Kevin and I were together for over 2 1/2 years before our parents met. I'm sure they would have met sooner if his parents lived on the Island.

Fortunately, the meeting went fine, just as I expected. Our parents are similar (his and my mom in particular.) We're both so happy that we're marrying into a loving families like our own.

Re: All the parents meet?

I have to admit I was very nervous for this. Matt's family is small and they are all very quiet. My clan (all 15 of them-when you add the SIL's and the neices and nephews) Is very loud and can be overwhelming if you are not used to it.

The whole thing actually worked out great and Matt's family all said how welcomed they felt.

So even though it is stressful in the end it will be fine!

Re: All the parents meet?

My parents have not met his parents and we are getting married in 6 months. My parents live in Colombia so they will have to meet them at the wedding. They will not have much to say to each other anyway since they don't speak much English. We are all laughing just thinking about the limo ride with both sets of parents. Nobody will probably say a word. Oh and did I mention its probably an hour ride. My dad will probably drink the whole time. :)

Re: All the parents meet?

Wine always help, unless they don't drink wine! His parents were invited to my niece's baptism so they met the whole family! It was nice because there were other people there besides our parents so there was very little pressure on us to entertain. I knew all of my parents (mom, dad and step-mom) would get along because they basically are easy-going people. My dad and step-mom came up to NYC recently to have dinner with his parents and us. My FI and I were about 15 minutes late, so the parents hung out at the bar talking about us. By the time we got there, they were getting along fine.

Re: All the parents meet?

We got enaged in June and our parents still have not met because FI family lives out of state. I'm not too nervous because they have spoken on the phone many times so they know eachother somewhat. I think sometime soon his family will come here and we'll take everyone to go see our hall and go out to dinner.

Re: All the parents meet?

I think the most awkward moment was that since my parents are divorced and since we didn't want 2 seperate 'meetings' I had both my parents and his over to our for coffee/cake. It was weird to see my parents together talking but everyone got along okay even though my parents are younger and a little more outgoing.

Re: All the parents meet?

FH & I have been together since July '99 and got engaged in February of this year. Our families didn't meet until August at our engagement party. My family is a mixed bag - mom can be conservative, brothers are very outspoken so I think I worried a little about how his family would react to my family. I also knew that I really didn't have any reason to worry because his family is the sweetest bunch of people. They are also very accepting. They have always treated me as if I were family from the day I met them all.

Re: All the parents meet?

We are on 5+yrs and our parents have not all met per say. My dad met his by chance when we stopped by FH's house. The one I am nervous about is my mom who can be a real pain sometimes. I know that they will all speak to each other out of courtesy but FH's folks could be my parents parents! There is definitely an age difference between them. Plus my parents go out all the time and his rarely do. It will probably happent at the eparty in April.
