Okay. My salon is charging me $510 for all of my alterations to include: Hemming ($280 something), pressing ($80), Bustle ($100 something) and then of course all the taxes. Is this highway robbery?

Re: Alteration costs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
seems a little high to me. I have a Maggie too, and my first fitting is this weekend.
I think if I hear anything above $300 for the hem and bustle, I'm going to

It may be relative. How much was the dress?

That is excessive.

Well, thank you again ladies! I went and picked the dress up. The problem is my bridal salon had closed down so this salon was 'helping brides' so I didn't really know of anyone else.
The name of the place is Rosalin's Bridal in Virginia. Nothing in NY.

It sounds like they were helping themselves to your money in a crisis situation. Is their a local seamstress you can hire? Check out the classifieds or the dry cleaners in the area.

SO GLAD you were able to rescue your dress and your money!
I am sure you will find another place who does great work for a lot less money!

Wow, I got scared and called my bridal salon. Thankfully all alterations ARE included, including hemming. I am on the short side and I know I will definitely need my gorgeous dress hemmed....Thank God I called and found out before. I seriously forgot to ask

I hope that things work out for the original poster but I don't think that the alteration costs are 'relative' to the gown $$$. My dress cost over $6000 and alterations were a flat fee of $425 no matter what you need to have done (at Kleinfeld.)
This was true whether a bride's gown cost $1000 or $5000+. More complex materials and beading cause the work to take more time if changes are needed, so I think that's why the 'individual costs' like hemming, bustle, etc add up.
I do think they should've told you beforehand though! You may want to do a search on here for wedding reviews because so many brides posted feedback re: alterations! Good luck.

That is a lot but my place wanted to charge me $400 something for the alterations and $600 something for the bustle which I thought was insane! When I went for my first fitting not much work needed to be done and that $400 cost for the alterations turned out to $87, so don't freak out just yet because you never know.
Good luck

There are still places that will not cap alterations and then it is relative to the detail and work that needs to be done. Certain fabrics are also harder to work with.

That is true but at certain salons you have to pay the flat alterations fee UP FRONT, not 'as needed or capped'!!! That means that even if you only need 1 thing done, you still have to pay full price. Regardless though the bridal salons are not supposed to order a gown without showing the alteration costs in WRITING, at the time of sale.
I just hope that the original poster can find a good place to go - I also have heard a lot of friends who called salons that would NOT ALTER a dress unless the bride purchased it THERE.
