alterations on the island

The place I'm getting my dress doesn't do alterations - do you know of any good seamstresses or alterations places on long island or in the city? Also, I've heard there there's usually 2-3 fittings - why are there multiple fittings if they can already see what needs to be altered during the first fitting? thanks!! :)

I believe there are multiple fittings b/c if your weight fluctuates you would need to have the dress re-fitted.
