Alterations Question

Alterations Question

My dress is coming in next month, and while I was already charged $150 for the hollow to hem (which had to be done by the manufacturer) my receipt says alterations are another $200.

I don't trust the dress shop with my alterations, because they were about to ruin it if I didn't insist on the hollow to hem measurement.

My question is this: Do I still have to pay the $200 if I take my dress elsewhere for alterations?? I am guessing if they do not do the alterations, I should not have to pay them for it, but FH is worried they might try to screw me over on this. That, and I would rather get my alterations done closer to home, the shop is in Brooklyn and I am in Suffolk.

Thanks in advance!!

IMO, if you have the slightest bit of doubt as to their ability and service, I wouldn't let them touch it.

just go there when it comes in, pay for it in full and tell them that your aunt or grandma will do it.

is the $200 flat fee a part of your contract? it shouldn't be.

it seems like just b/c the receipt tells you how much it is, doesn't mean that you have committed to pay that.

To be very safe, you should have a friend (NOT YOU) call the bridal salon and say they wanted to buy a gown there but want to know about the alteration fees. They may say that you have to pay no matter what because it is a 'flat fee' and if you choose to get it done elsewhere, it's still on the contract that you signed!!! That's EXACTLY what happened to my friend.

But don't worry, I am not trying to scare ya - all you have to do is play hardball with them and tell them that the contract / receipt wasn't clear nd if they don't touch your dress, you aren't paying the extra fee. But still have someone else call first to inquire about their general rules. This way it's not tied to your specific contract when you call.

ETA: The salon I bought my gown almost messed up the hollow-to-hem also! The beading around the waist would have been ALLLLL wrong if the gown wasn't orignally ordered with hollow-to-hem to match my height, so *I* had to press for that. I can't believe they'd be careless about it!

Good luck and let us know what happens!

Re: Alterations Question

The place where I bought my gown wrote down on my contract what the fee is for alterations but also told me that it is not mandatory for me to get my alterations done there. I would definitely call ahead or have someone call for you if you don't trust them with your gown.

Re: Alterations Question

There is no contract per se, it just says on my receipt alterations - $200 and is part of the total price of the gown.

I will call them tomorrow to find out for sure.

Thanks for all the advice!

keep us posted, I'm pretty sure that $200 is probably a 'capped' price for alterations if you do decide to get them done there.
