How much is the average cost for alterations? I was just reading on Macy's bridal (will go there to look for my demetrios dress) and it says average is around $450. Really???

I would like to know what everyone else is paying too! Kleinfeld (where I got my dress) charges a flat fee of $600 and I think it's outrageous! I'm thinking of taking my dress somewhere else!

Re: Alterations question
I got my dress at Fontana Bridal in Scarsdale. They charge a flat fee of $450. That covers as much or as little as I need.

Re: Alterations question
Definitely depends on the shop. Lillette's caps at $295, while Bridal Reflections in Massapequa told me it was a cap of $495

Mine was a $250 cap.
ETA: This was at Paradise Bridal. I think it was $350 originally but since I had to order hollow to hem, they had me pay $100 for the hollow to hem order which I wasn't pleased about, but they took it out of the alterations cap so that was okay I guess.

Re: Alterations question
Mine are capped at $395 at Bridal Reflections....I went just last weekend for my first fitting and it came to about $150 for my alterations....BUT alterations don't include the bustle, so add that in, plus some custom work, and it was quite a bit.

Re: Alterations question
I dont know yet how much mine will cost. They told me since my measurements were the same as the mesurements for the size they ordered me, I would prob. just need bustle and hem. However, there is no cap for alterations at macy's bridal.

What's a 'hollow to hem'? So they are charging you $500 for that + $500 for reg alterations?!?!?

Hollow to hem is when the designer cuts the dress to your height so that you won't need a hem when the dress comes in. This is usually done for short girls (like me) especially when the gown has a lot of detailing on the bottom. This way you don't lose any of the effect of the detailing. I am also getting a hollow to hem, and it costs $360 for my dress/designer. This is additional to my alteration cap (which shouldn't be much now that I won't need a hem) and my bustle.

thanks! Yup! Laura described it perfectly! It also depends on the type of dress, the top of my mind has very intricate beading so they said it was required. Story of my life - i always have to get everything tailored to fit me so i wasnt going to skimp on my wedding day.
