Am I cheap

Am I cheap

Okay it looks like i will be having around 280 at my wedding and my hall suggest $ 3 per person for the maitre'd...i think $850 on topof everything else is crazy......

Am I being cheap? I feel bad but I just think this is too much of a tip for someone who only is working for 5 hours and is just there to fix any problems that seriously should be included in a contract where i am paying over $100 a plate....

I was thinking more like $500...you think that would be considered cheap?

Can anyone tell me what they paid or are paying their matre'd and how many people they paid for...

I had approx 120 guests, and I gave $250 (at least that's what my spreadsheet says - LOL, I really don't remember) but I know I was thinking $2/pp was what I was thinking ...

I heard $2pp. I think a tip the size you are talking about is outrageous. Like there isn't enough money flying out of your pockets to the hall.

You know how I feel about 'suggested tips' - I feel it is RUDE for you to SUGGEST what I should 'TIP' - if I think you should get a tip, you'll get what I think you deserve. - and neither me or my fiancee are ever cheap !! but don't TELL me what' i'm 'supposed' to tip you !!!
IMO- anyone who has the audacity to do that, is totally out of line. it's a tip !! you're not even OBLIGATED to give anything. !! ( i mean, don't NOT give anything !!) but you know what i mean !!

Also, seriously doesn't it depend on the service that night? It just is weird to me to suggest a tip and then what happens if he screws up? I don't think that is right...nor do i think they should be tipped that night. To me I think you should wait to hear if there are any stories that you should worry about before tipping (I think June262004 found out some stories after her wedding)...

I was thinking of sending a tip to him later in the week and explaining it to him before the reception starts.....

I hate these suggested tips. Show me good service first. As a former waitress/hostess way back when I had to EARN my tip. Could you imagine if I went up to a table of six and said... 'Hi my name is... I'll be your waitress tonight, oh, and by the way, you must tip me X amount per head'?

What happened to earning?

I think it's a great idea to tell them a head of time that they will be tipped after the party adepending upon the level of service provided to you and your guests.

Nothing wrong with dropping it off the next day or asking someone you trust to do it while on your honeymoon.

You are definetly not being cheap. I agree with you completely. $500 is a good range, and I think you could even go a little less if you wanted.

I tipped the matrie d' $150 and if she didnt like it thats okay, i wont get married there again!

Re: Am I cheap

You are not being cheap and I think $500 is a very generous tip. You should have $ with you for a tip, and give what you think they deserve based on performance...
Mine was really bad and we gave her a bad tip.... Infact we tipped her so poorly that she had the nerve to tell her manager who came up to my parents to talk about the standard tip.
I dont think there should be a 'standard' tip, they should have to work for it.

AliKing I remember you having a bad experience...can you FM me the details...like what i should be on the watch for...thanks..

And yes i have decided that I am going to tell the maitre'd that i will drop off the tip the next day....that i don't want to 'carry that much money around'.....i think that is fair...hey if he does an outstanding job i can give him more money...

We're going to have somewhere in the range of 200 guests, give or take. I'm planning on tipping no more than $400, less if I don't feel he deserves it.

125 guests. $300 tip. And, my maitre D was geniunely VERY thankful! And, he did a great job. There were a couple of mishaps...but he did the best he could to make up for them.

edited to add: I never intended to give any more than $300, and I was originally planning on having over 200 guests...

I was reading the tips and had to laugh with the comments some of you made. You girls are so funny. I loved the one about being a waitress and telling them what should everyone tip and also the one that if the BM doesnt like the tip, she won't get married there again...too funny....
I definitely think that $500 is a good tip if good service is provided. And it's always good to hear the stories that you happen to know about it afterwards if you don't get to notice them that day.
I will personally make sure that I tip according to the service and I will let them know that at each table there will be someone at the end of the night who will be telling me how the service was, how the food was etc and I will tip according to that. I think this will not only help me in them providing exceptional service but if they want a nice tip, they should definitely make sure they know how to service all of my guests and myself. I feel we are already paying enough $$$ to have a nice reception. I find it extremely RUDE when I see those suggested tips. And my FH and I are not cheap at all but I think it's only fair you tip according to the service provided.
It's like you said the magic word 'Weddings', and all of the services, gratuities and everything else gets multiplied by 1000.
